Crazy how close we probably came to waking up this morning to the news that Ryan Lochte was killed.

Although I am disappointed to find out he actually did beat Phelps for gold in a 400m race.

Outrageous for a top athlete to believe in themselves and their ability to be the best. Sounds like a giant douchebag

the swimming thing is overplayed. Yah there's a lot of events, but **** is true for lots of things.

There's running fast. There's running fast over eight separate distances. There's running fast while jumping hurdles, also over several distances. There's running fast while jumping obstacles and splashing in puddles. There's race-walking which is running but you have to keep a foot on the ground at all times, also over several distances. There's running fast while passing a baton to teammates, also over several distances. There's running fast combined with swimming and biking. There's running fast over multiple distances combined with jumping and throwing, with separate flavors for women and men.

You can do the same thing for net sports. Why do we need so many different versions of hit ball over net? Volleyball. Beach volleyball. Singles tennis. Doubles tennis. Mixed doubles tennis. Badminton singles. Badminton doubles. Mixed doubles for Badminton. Team ping pong. Singles ping pong.

What about boat-go-fast? There are 10 sailing events, 14 rowing events, 12 canoe sprint events and 4 canoe slalom events. Boat go fast!

There are 10 fencing events which are all versions of 'hit them with a pointy stick fast'. There are three flavors of 'pin them on ground' with greco roman, freestyle and judo. Starting in 2020 there will be 3 version of hit 'em hard with Boxing, TKD and karate. Cycling has BMX, Mountain bike, Road and Track and has 18 events for bike-go-fast.

so it's not like swimming is some massive outlier. everybody stfu about it.

let me know when beach volleyballers are also competing in ping pong and i'll concede there is too much overlap

i agree track has way too much stuff. boating too apparently but who cares about those

+1

Way too much overlap.

Like 100 m butterfly and 200 m butterfly, really? One would be enough.

50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m freestyle, you could probably drop one of them.

200 m, 400 m medley, one should be enough.

4x100 m relay and 4x200 m relay, one should be enough.

It's not like some these races really require completely different kind of form or somebody would be completely excluded. Most swimmers do multiple distances and could with relative ease adapt if their bread-and-butter distance would be excluded.

The same can not be said for something like most 100 m sprinters. Also they are not competing in 100 m bunny hops (butterfly swimming, seriously?).

Meh. You kinda wrong. It's not like Phelps is dominant over a variety of distances. He's dominant in the 100 and 200 in two strokes, and he parlays that into a **** load of medals. Bolt is also dominant in the 100 and 200, but there's only one way to run it. And there's no 4x200 relay.

Not hating on Phelps, his longevity is insane (being a swimmer instead of a track athlete helps in that regard for sure, tho). He'd be the gold record holder even if you cut the events number.

Open water swimming: in addition to having to put their heads in virus-water, the pontoon dock the race was supposed to start from was destroyed by the surf.

We don't like the way your sport works the one time every 4 years that we actually pay any attention to it, so you should change it!

I'd buy the "swimming medals are cheap" argument if second place to Phelps in swimming medals wasn't 9 golds and 12 total (different people fwiw).

I think it's close between Phelps and Bolt. There is some medal inflation in swimming snd the population of people who try to butterfly swim is a bit smaller than the population of people who try to run really fast.
