I didn't mean to imply violent crime. I meant "something as opposed to nothing". Essentially, someone will eventually try and pickpocket you.

I do not think something violent is inevitable at all. I also wouldn't move there if I did.

Tougher question that GOAT city is probably "GOAT city under 500K". Or whatever arbitrary population limit you want. But basically other than obvious gigantic capital-level cities, what are the best places to live?
middle-sized northern or german-ish European cities. Stockholm, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Berlin, Hamburg, etc

Yeah 500k is really small. Tbh a cutoff of even 3mm metropolitan area makes it interesting.

missed the 500k part- however the idea of northern/germanic Europe should still be accurate.

The HBO Real Sports expose on the IOC and the Rio games is damning. These games are going to be catastrophic.

< 500k - any French city just below that size, probably .. I mean, not somewhere like Toulon, obviously; some places in -hiss- Italy, maybe, not so much in Germany/Holland/Denmark/... below 500k; in Belgium are we looking at Bruges/Chareloi/Ghent/...? - I'm not sure they are really in the running.

at ~3m it's a different game ... Lyon wins this outright by ainec, surely? unless individual restos or chefs bring Copenhagen/wastelands of Catalonia/... into play

Charleston, SC is pretty great every time I've been there. At 130k it's probably too far under your limit to crack the top 20 tho.

Charleston SC is pretty great to visit. It is nowhere near GOAT to live though. Part of that is just being too small to have very much going on it gets boring after awhile (also it's 3 hours to Charlotte and 5.5 to Atlanta, so it's hard to pop over to a real city for a bit).

Spent 4 days at the City of God favela last month. My gf has an aunt there and we never went there because of.. reasons, but this time around they'd really hate us if we didn't visit. was scared as f but nothing happened. Saw a "you are going to die tonight at midnight" warning on the walls and some dude signaled us to stop when we were leaving but he was just trolling and when we stopped the car he just passed by us. Needless to say I shat bricks.

Favelas near the ocean are during day are fine IME. Mixed fear vibes at night.

Well yeah, it's cheating lol. Rhein-Ruhr seems to be considered one metro area by lot of people

Even though City of God improved, it's still run by drug dealers. When we were going up there at night in my gfs uncle car we had to turn the car lights off and just let the "alert" sign on (don't know how to name that in english) so they would know that he lives there. I'd never live in a place where everytime you enter your neighborhood you have to ask for permission.

If they wanted us to stop, I think running would make things worse. They'd probably have some dudes pointing gun at us in every corner. It's a very narrow road down.
Actually, a Brazilian actress almost died recently because she was in a can and they entered a favela by mistake when waze gave them the wrong address. They tried to run and got shot.

Yeah if ever there was a time/place to try something dramatic like "legalize all drugs" Brazil would be a good option. Would help if the US didn't exert such massive pressure on Latin America to be so super duper anti-drug.
