Re: Olympics: Official bitch about NBC's coverage thread

Hear that sound? It's the sound of NBC executives having the last laugh.

The network has been excoriated for programming decisions related to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Further, the Games have been billed as the first "social media Olympics," a nod to the many unprecedented ways to watch the competitions unfold across a variety of devices.

But a new poll suggests that the majority of Americans are watching the Olympics the old fashioned way: on TV...

"Overall, 76 percent of Olympic watchers describe the coverage as excellent (29 percent) or good (47 percent); 18 percent describe it as only fair (13 percent) or poor (5 percent)," according to poll results...

Re: Olympics: Official bitch about NBC's coverage thread

I think the thing that bothers me the most about NBC's coverage isn't the lack of live TV coverage (I watch online for the most part anyway). It's the fact that, while they allow you to watch any event live online, they only allow you to pause/rewind/replay footage that they won't be airing in prime-time. But it doesn't matter how much they will be showing, if they are showing any of it, you can't replay any of it.

For example, track cycling. That's a relatively obscure sport, so all the days it aired, you were free to watch it live. Pause it, rewatch it later. Basically do whatever you want. But on the day the men's track sprint final was on, you couldn't do any of that. You watch it live or not at all. Need to step out of the house for a second, too bad, you can't watch it later.

But they don't segment the video. The track cycling was like a 3 hour event featuring, not just the men's finals, but also the men's bronze match, the women's omnium, and the women's sprint semis. The only thing they showed on prime time was the men's sprint gold medal match, but you couldn't watch any of it that day, unless you watched it live.

Not annoying, but funny is the way they treat basketball. Even though basketball is one of the biggest sports in the Olympics, they aren't tape delaying any of it. You can watch it online, pause, rewind, replay, whatever. Even though basketball is indisputably bigger than, say, men's track cycling, it's available in its entirety from the time it starts.

It's almost as if they are treating basketball as a real sport and the other events as just "entertainment." IOW, NBC wouldn't dare tape delay a "real" American sport like football, baseball, or basketball. But you fake sports like beach volleyball or track cycling, we're just fine tape delaying it.

And to follow up on my last post, BMX is another event that is live only. Finals are in an hour and a half, when I won't be home. So I have to wait until prime time to watch it. Screw you NBC.

I have to admit to liking the studio hosts on NBC Sports Network.

Nbc isn't going to show a whole basketball game in prime time, and I don't think people would be as willing to watch portions of a basketball game like they are other Olympic sports.

Re: Olympics: Official bitch about NBC's coverage thread

NBC is getting a lot of grief for their tape delay. So what do they spend the first 30 minutes of their broadcast on tonight? Team USA basketball.

"Oh that's not that bad" you say. The game was at noon, PDT, so it's only a few hours delayed.

Nope. They didn't cover the 2012 basketball team. They covered the 1992 basketball team.

WTF are they thinking?

They're thinking that 20 years is an appropriate delay. (Don't tell me the who won in '92!)

Hey NBC, if you're going to cut away for a single 30 second commercial, do it during free throws or something ffs

Re: Olympics: Official bitch about NBC's coverage thread

Maybe NBC did learn from their criticisms. According to the @nbcolympics twitter feed, they will be streaming the closing ceremonies. In case you forgot, they didn't stream the opening ceremonies, then claimed that "watch every event live" only included "sporting events," not the opening and closing ceremonies.

NBC gets to **** us one more time by running the closing ceremonies from 8:30-11:00 when Big Brother is coming on at 8:00 and Breaking Bad at 10:00

lol @ NBC cutting the only relevant band (Muse) out of the American prime time broadcast.

Seriously, **** them. The main thing I'm taking away from these olympics was how good the BBC and even lolCanadaTV coverage is, and just how incredibly inept NBC is.

Never watching NBC Olympic coverage again. Thanks to Mr. Internet, I don't have to.
