Scheyer grew up a Duke fan. His dad was a big Duke fan. He went to fantasy adult camps at Duke. Scheyer and his father cried together when Laetner hit the shot to beat Kentucky.
Weber got hired at Illinois with Scheyer already a near lock to goto Duke. That one didn't bother me at all.
The recruit miss that really bothered me was Sherron Collins. He, in the press, said he was going to Illinois. He idolized Dee Brown and wanted to be the next. Kansas used some gray area stuff to funnel money to Longstreet, the handler of Collins (allegedly). It was stuff Illinois could have done but didn't. Collins was Illinois to lose, and they did.
The other recruiting misses that hurt are:
Robbie Hummel - Weber took the sure thing commitment with Billy Cole and gave up the battle Illinois was leading for Hummel.
Iman Shumpert - hated Weber's style and BigTen slowdown in general, so he bolted to G Tech.
Chasson Randle - Father is huge Illinois fan, but he disliked Big Ten's style and went to Stanford.
Suggs and Beal - both hated the style of play.
Evan Turner - Illinois was close to locking him up and his father reappears in his life and happens to live in Columbus... grrrr.
Brandon Rush - Illinois was about the sole contender at one point and passed because they didn't think he could get approved academically.
Those were the ones that hurt.
Rose had to go to an Adidas school and Illinois is Nike, so it couldn't work out.
Anthony Davis.... well... from what I've heard, you'd have to go beyond gray area for that one.
