so tilting, lost another game. on a way better team this year, but their championship team added a bunch of plugs (me, et al) and lost some ringers, so now we're way worse. won the first couple games easy, now in a big losing streak. think the forwards think it's the D's fault, and vice versa. everyone blaming everyone, good times. i need to drink less and get into shape, would probably help a bit.

Re: Official 2011-12 2p2ers playing hockey thread

had a very enlightening skill session down in the basement the other day. i downgraded to a 65 flex intermediate stick, mainly 'cause i want to tape my wrister and i want to see the flex. then grabbed my 65 flex stick and went to stick-n-puck this morning. focused on dribbling while moving my feet and wristers. it's pretty badass to skate around and shoot and see/feel the flex. i think i've come to a realization that i like shorter sticks, so i am going to cut down my int stick which should make it a little stiffer (70-75) and try to use it in a game.

oh, by the way i am playing in a double-header this sunday. the first game as a sub C or D for our "farm" team one division lower, and then right after taking on an average team from our own division. i am pretty sure i can outskate anyone from division lower, so i would gladly play C, but 1) i am pretty sure i am a big fat oh-fer at faceoffs for an entire year (probably had to take 5-6 of them) and 2) i kinda like to take turns while forechecking (i usually play W, so i split forechecking duties with my C), and on this team i'll probably have to do 100% of the forecheck.

got five new twigs in the mail, inspired me to post some pics:

crazy how a wood stick eventually starts to lose pop and actually permanently bows after a while:

How many wood sticks will you go through in a 30 game season? How much are they? Can you order long ones? ones available in stores here aren't long enough for me.

Re: Official 2011-12 2p2ers playing hockey thread

i usually go through about a stick a game give or take including practices. some break and some just become noodles after a bit. i pay 27.99USD per when i buy them because i always get more than 5. i'm not sure if you can get really long ones... the standard senior 85 flex is only like 59" and i've never bought anything else.

obv it comes down to personal preference, but still want to ask, why wood over composite?

basically the three major differences ignoring price are weight, feel and durability. composite sticks are lighter typically, although it's not really by as much as it seems - my wood sticks are ~650g, an S19 Stealth is 470ish and once you add tape the difference is relatively smaller and i actually prefer a little extra weight. also, because the shaft of a wood stick is where most of the weight difference is they feel a little better balanced to me than most any composite stick i've ever picked up. durability again is close for me, because although composite sticks retain their pop much longer i tend to break both wood and composite sticks at about the same rate and would rarely take advantage of what a composite stick offers there and the cost difference more than offsets the wood sticks that get too soft/spongy feeling for me.

feel is where wood really shines for me, literally no composite stick i've ever used feels as lively and sweet. the wood blades tend to torque and deflect a little more and i get a better sense of where the puck is on the blade of my stick without having to look because of the way it feels when i handle the puck. also for whatever reason i prefer a shaft that flexes evenly rather than a low kick-point, which most composites have.

the idea that composite sticks allow you to shoot the puck faster is a myth, there's actually a study that tested it and the difference is so small that the data wasn't scientifically relevant. which makes sense, most of the velocity on a players shot comes from both their wrist strength and their ability to use the flex of the stick. provided a wood and composite stick are the same flex, a given player should be able to flex each the same and transfer the same amount of energy to the puck.

Re: Official 2011-12 2p2ers playing hockey thread

played some puck tonight for the first time in a while.

it was just some pick up which i don't think ill ever go to again

it tilts me beyond belief with the lack of effort or general hockey knowledge that some people have. I know its pretty much pond hockey with no strategy and or care to back-check but it then makes me not give a s*** to try.

need to get in a league where ppl have some concept of how to play the game

thanks for the response miserablee.

re: the flex point issue you mentioned, there are composites that do have a more "even" flex (though you prob already knew that). personally, i prefer a low-kick point.

yeah honestly with all the options out there i could probably find a composite stick that feels and behaves very very similarly to a wood stick, but it would involve a lot of trial and error and potentially using custom sticks through bauer or whatever and i kind of feel like if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Re: Official 2011-12 2p2ers playing hockey thread

first game: sub in our lower div team. they asked me to center the first line with two guys i know from the next div up team. i probably ended up around 50% or slightly less on the dot. i need some faceoff drills. i've never played C, so i start running around trying to support everyone, and we created a lot of chances. my lw is fast, although he has no idea what he is doing out there and thinks everyone should support him on every side. he is wrong a lot, and he should be supporting a lot on defense because he is one of the best skaters on the team. my rw is a big burly dude. he is not very fast but he works pretty hard.

midway through the first i am hanging out around the goal while the rest of my team is trying hard to give the puck away to the opponent. somehow our defenseman who has really come along in the last year finds himself completely alone with a lane to the goal. since he is a defenseman, and he's been taught not to never pinch, he bombs it from the blueline, lol. i am facing him, but i follow the shot and bang the rebound between the goalie's legs.

forgot my white jersey, so i had to borrow someone else's. naturally, they got the goal on the scoresheet.

then we commit an interference, and my line lets in the PP goal. then my line lets in another one. another line lets in another. 3-1. somehow our second line manages to tie it up on the same shift. we then trade goals and hold on to a 4-4 tie.

i got lucky and drew a penalty. i take a tight turn pursuing the puck and get just in front of a defenseman. he is skating in his own lane parallel to the wall but doesn't see me. i don't remember the contact, i may have been slightly ahead of him, or i may have run into him. anyway the result is i go down because he is a behemoth. somehow the ref gives him interference. i didn't complain obviously but that was a huge missed call.

TL;DR Cliffs

scored 1 garbage goal, then blamed myself because we allowed three in a row.
