It's good to be back! Can't post at work because of firewall restrictions (except if it's on my phone, which is such a pain in the ass), but y'all can thank Mr. Schwartz for bringing me back. I miss this community a lot.

No lady trouble; quite the contrary. 1.5 years strong with this fair maiden below. Quite possibly looking at Mrs. Geddy.

If Matty only had one year left, it'd be automatic, but word is Flames ownership is extremely averse to buyouts, so I'm not sure he'll be a candidate. If any buyout is to happen, it'll be Wideman.

Friedman recently mentioned Wideman to Edmonton as a hypothetical, and with all due respect to Elliotte's insights on the game, I don't think he's the type to float something all by himself that's completely unsubstantiated. Depending on how you make the numbers work, I think there are fits for Wideman's last year as a RH PP specialist...and he still generates CF events at a decent clip. Fit is everything, though - both in pairing and overall deployment.

Been trying to think lately how a Stajan-for-Bozak deal could work out for both teams. Maybe I'm just reaching here but I think a fit could be found there.

Dont see how that comes close to working for Leafs unless it's a cap dump

Thinking more along the lines of Bozak being pretty damn expensive for his last 2 years if he ends up becoming the 4C (in some not-so-implausible scenarios that see Kadri being the de facto 3C). It would be about ~$1M in savings for TML in a straight swap, but I think there'd need to be more moving pieces than that (e.g. prospect capital coming back Toronto's way)...and the Leafs also still need to dump off Laich. Meh.

I dunno. Flames need to find a more functional 4C somehow. Just don't see a Stajan buyout as all that realistic; if he only had one year left, for sure.

just took a look at the 2016-17 Canucks and holy **** now i'm depressed

gone: Vrbata, Bartkowski, Weber, Prust
probably also gone: Burrows, Higgins

kind of assume that Dan Hamhuis will be re-signed, because wtf else are they gonna do?
also assume they'll fall to 4th/5th in the draft and take Matthew Tkachuk #meatpotatoes
(otherwise their list is likely the same as everyone else's with 1Auston, 2Laine, 3Pulj)

Quote:
Sedin - Sedin - Hansen
Baertschi - Horvat - Virtanen
Etem - Sutter - Dorsett
McCann - Granlund - Vey
Rodin, Tkachuk

Edler - Tanev
Hamhuis - Sbisa
Hutton - Tryamkin
Larsen

Miller
Markstrom
hopefully they don't sign Hamhuis and Biega takes his spot for all of the lulz

i should seriously just starting scouting the 2017 Draft now...

Geddy, Daniel Pribyl going to sign with Calgary according to Elliotte Friedman after czech playoffs end

He was 2nd in czech extraliga scoring with 16+29 in 45 games. Only one ahead of him - Roman Cervenka at 23+38

Disagree, it was fun rooting for every team playing the Canucks down the stretch. More fun than I've had cheering FOR them in quite some time.

Granted, instead of burning it to the ground and starting over Lindenning dropped the Tsar Bomba on it. We just need to bink enough no-brainers in the 1st round to build a winner by accident.

Shouldn't take longer than a decade or so.

yeah rooting against the team was alright, considering i dislike the GM and so many of his players, but i think i'd prefer if they were good again at some point. or fun to watch. unfortunately i think they'll be neither again next season.

Fallers:

The Penticton 2 - seemed inevitable that the two BCHL teammates wouldn't be able to hold those high spots all year against more high profile prospects. C Tyson Jost has fallen to the bottom half of the 1st round, and D DANTE FABBRO is off the list entirely. the good news is that both will have a chance to improve their stock at the upcoming U18 WCs.

U18 World Championships:

not a lot, but some top prospects playing at these U18 WCs in North Dakota coming up. should be a lot of mid-round talent looking to improve their stock. and scouts, the scouts will definitely be there ... this tournament is like the World Juniors for undrafted players.

http://www.tsn.ca/chychrun-among-dra...-camp-1.466409

F - Michael McLeod, Tyson Jost, Pascal Laberge, etc
D - Jakob Chychrun, Jake Bean, Dante Fabbro, etc

looks like lots of kids for the 2017 & 2018 drafts as well, ya know, in case you wanna get a head start on next years tanking.

hopefully the other countries are also repped by some top prospects as well, but it seems like the top guys are busy in the playoffs, or just duck it because they have more to lose than to gain.
ok so JOST and FABBRO are KILLING IT, br0. Jost just scored a highlight reel empty netter (lolButton's words) to take the tournament scoring lead from younger Nylander, and Fabbro was named Canada's player of the game, in their group deciding win over Finland. Puljujarvi also seems to have turned up for this thing after being eliminated from the Finnish playoffs, for whatever reason. he made a couple nice plays in the few minutes i saw, not surprised.

also, Jost has committed for the national champions and tournament hosts North Dakota for next year, will join fab frosh Brock Boeser, which should be pretty neat.

Keller is leading USA#1 in scoring, team also includes likely 1st rounders Logan Brown & Kieffer Bellows.

knockout round up next, Canada & Sweden are on one side of the bracket, USA, Finland, and probably Russia on the other. check your local listings...

in other news, at the U18s in North Dakota...

Finland 4-3 Russia
- 1g/1a for Puljujarvi
- and something called Eeli Tolvanen (2017 Draft) had a hattrick

Canada 9-1 Switzerland
- team captain JOST might have about clinched himself the tournament scoring lead with a 3g/2a game
- Brett Howden also had 2g/3a, FABBRO had 3a, McLeod with 2g

Sweden 7-2 Slovakia
- in typical Swedish fashion 5 guys had 2 points, and nobody ended up with more than that

USA 8-0 Czech Republic
- Keller led the way with 1g/2a, 5 others chipped in with 2 points

sets up a couple of tasty semifinal games tomorrow:

United States v Finland
Canada v Sweden

Apparently there's rumors floating out there that Zetterberg was undermining Blashill all season. Blashill would have team meetings to go over the game plan, he would leave, Z would close the door and draw up his own game plan. Also with that are rumors that Z and Kronwall forced his hand to play their Swedish friends Ericsson and Andersson over more qualified players like Smith and Mantha.

Will dig up links when I get to a comp, not really sure how legit these rumors are but you rarely hear these type of rumors if there isn't something behind it.

IIHF President: IOC won’t pay NHL transportation, insurance costs for 2018 Olympics

WELP

wonder what's really going on here. i mean sure Koreans might not gaf about hockey, but what's an extra $20m or so to the IOC? not like it's their ****ing money anyway.

the players want to go. the owners? only if they want another shot at cracking the Asian market. otherwise nah, and they're quite happy about this news. gives them an easy out.

sounds pretty unbelievable.

i mean the part about gameplanning i could see there maybe being some truth in there (like if Z was correcting a point or two about something he knew more about), but a player like Zetterberg forcing a coach's hand about who to play sounds completely ridiculous. i mean most coaches bristle even when the GM meddles in that area. if there's any truth to that part it's probably him making suggestions / giving his opinion, hard to believe he'd dictate/demand anything like that.

seems like typical end of season muckraking based on half truths at best.

Haven't been around these parts much lately.

Don't have much to say about the Sens. Another coach is coming, will he last longer than 18 months?

Might be some news on the long term future of the team this week though. Will the arena move closer to downtown Ottawa? The NCC(National Capital Commission) is going to be telling the public whether they prefer Eugene Melnyk's plan for redeveloping Lebreton Flats, or whether they like the proposal given by Andre Desmarais/Guy Laliberte. Both proposals include a hockey arena.

A lot of people seem to want the non-Melnyk bid to win, thinking it will force him to sell.

Anyway, it's on the NCC agenda for April 28. Knowing a little bit about the NCC, I fully expect them to say they prefer neither proposal, and we go another 40 years without actually redeveloping the Lebreton Flats area.
