Looks like I stayed up just long enough (I'm a modern era draft degen). With the 5th overall pick, SarcasticRat selects...
"The Dominator" -- Dominik Hasek
Haven't done a ton of research about goalie depth but I have a feeling there's not much compared to other positions. I couldn't pass up the chance to take (imo) the best goalie of this era.
Hasek broke into league late at age 26 after playing in the Czech Republic. He began his stretch of dominance in 1993, posting a 1.95 goals against average in 58 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, and continued to dominate from there. From 1993-2001 Hasek probably had the greatest goaltending peak of all time, winning six Vezina trophies, two Hart trophies, and leading the lead in save percentage 6 times.
With the Sabres, Hasek was almost literally a one man team, and pretty much singlehandedly carried the 1999 Sabres to within inches of the Stanley Cup. Later in his career with the Red Wings Hasek finally did win a cup. He also turned in one of the most dominating olympic performances ever, leading the Czech Republic to the 1998 gold medal while posting a 0.97 goals against average.
Known for his unorthodox, flopping style of play, Hasek has the highest save percentage, goals against average, and adjusted goals against average of the modern era. No goaltenders in this draft were capable of taking over games and simply being unbeatable like Hasek was, and in this league that will have some scary offenses I think he's incredibly valuable.
Goaltender is imo the most valuable position in hockey, and I'm very happy to get the guy who I feel is the best one with the 5th pick. Even the most elite offenses in this league will have a hard time getting the puck by The Dominator.
