For the last few days I was trying to recall the name of an NL pitcher who had a lights out season in the late 90s/early 00s but never returned anywhere close to form. Then it struck me... Jeff D'Amico!

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...7amije01.shtml

He went 12-7 for the Brewers in 2000 with a 2.66 ERA. This understates how great he was for that one season... his ERA was below 2 as late as August 22nd.

However, D'Amico never had a sub-4.50 ERA in any of his other major league seasons.

Another cool example might be Courtney Alexander:

http://www.basketballreference.com/p...lkid=ALEXACO02

He was traded from the Mavericks to the Wizards during his rookie season and averaged 17 PPG in 27 games for the Wizards. Somehow he only played 3 years in the NBA?

Brady Anderson, 1996.

Hit .297, 50 HRs, 110 RBIs.

Averaged .264 , 18 HRs, 64 RBIs in the 8 years between 1996.

First thought... Roger Maris, 1961 (actually 2nd thought... 1st was Jason Bere 12-2 as 2nd year pitcher but not nearly as dramatic)

61 HR (next best season = 39)
142 RBI (only one other season over 100 [112])
132 R (next best season = 98)

Although 39/112/98 was actually enough for MVP in 1960.
(But ain't 61/142/132)

{The Brady Anderson answer above will be hard to beat in this thread -- great answer!}

Luis Gonzalez' 2001 was pretty loltastic.

57 homes and a 174 OPS+. Had never hit more than 31 homers or OPS+ higher than 138 before that clean season.

Not quite Brady Anderson-esque though, as he hit upper 20s homers several years.

it's more of a fluke considering it wasn't just cheap hits, it was all around an awesome hitting season

adjusted for all time eqa of .367, which is historically great

his next highest was .314

by .eqa, that is much more out of whack than Brady Anderson

Brady Anderson was the first guy I thought of. Gonzo is a good one too.

Guillermo Mota? Posted an incredible 2003 season/half of 2004 before he got traded and sucked again. He did well his rookie year in 1999 and for 18 IP on the Mets in 2006, but sucked everywhere else except for that one spot in the middle. Hooray steroids!

Oh! I thought of a good one.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...etanra01.shtml

Look at his ERA+ from 2006-2008. Or look at it entirely, whatever. He went from being the best reliever of all time (this is actually not much of an exaggeration, if at all) to being below league-average in the next year. lol

Also:

2005 season. 9 walks in 188.3 IP. Pretty sure that can't be done even if you were strictly throwing batting practice (to be fair, Silva may actually just be doing that).

Just wanted to point out that this season would not make the top 15 best seasons in a league of Barry Bonds + Babe Ruth. Def not historically great. I'd be shocked if it was top 100 probably closer to 200-300 best offensive seasons by EqA.

He'd be tied for 22nd if we expanded the league to include Ted Williams.

Though to tear holes in my own argument. I just ran through some pages and it appears that he's 50/50 with this EqA to lead the league in any given year. And its def not in the 200-300th best season. More like 100ish. Oopz.

WTF @ Betancourt.

Beltre's a good one. (edit: he was 2nd in MVP voting in that 2004 season. 1st was Bonds, with a line of .362/.609/.812 to Beltre's .334/.388/.629 )

Rich Aurilia isn't quite as bad as I thought, but OPS+ of 94, 100, 102, 146, 92, 91, 78.
