Being at the bottom of the draft, it was obvious that in order to get any shot at winning some RANGZ the best strategy was to not even bother focusing on the first 3 years. So I made it a point to not go for any players aged 27 and up. Turned out to be a good strategy seeing as how team 72off and team switch0723 (unless he gets banned for picking an illegal) already have those years locked up. I also didnt want to go full team JMurder3 style by picking every single highly touted prospect out there because when we do that in real life, come every September we get Oil Change, and thats just not fun. (It actually turned out to be a great strategy for him as he was the only one who really went at it like that which really increased his odds at his prospects hitting instead of busting).
And so even though I was left with a bit of a half-assed approach at building for the later years, I still feel like my team has a chance at some success down the road. Teams that scare me down the line are team JMurder3 and his high school band, team rafiki/Effen with two potential generational types in MacKinnon/Yakupov playing on a line together, team DatFirefly/Yell Fire! also built an awesome all-around young team.
Ultimately I feel that all I need for my team to win some RANGZ is two things: for one of Strome/Lindholm to become a future stud C (either Strome becoming 80pt+ scorer or Lindholm a two-way 70pt type) and for future Captain Morgan Rielly to maximize his potential and become the next generations Brian Leetch. Any of the other young guys (Domi, Rattie, Ristolainen) can amount to serviceable types and Id still have a decent chance. If they amount to anything more then you can lock up at least a RANG in Years 5 through 10 with a small chance of an actual DYNASTY on full display.
Yeah, I felt like I had to go hard in that direction because I'm probably the only one in the draft who doesn't actually follow hockey (although I enjoy watching the Bruins in playoffs).
Being able to get a huge chunk of the top prospects in the minors right now based on a variety of scouting services seemed like the optimal solution to that problem.
Every guy might not turn into a star, but they all have elite upside & non-terrible floors, so worst case scenario we'll have a team full of pretty good players & Taylor Hall GOATing it up in 10 years.
I still owe a full write-up sometime soon.
