At Pick #18 Team YellDatFire is proud to select

Spoiler:

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Already playing top line minutes albeit on a weaker Edmonton team, Nugent-Hopkins had an impressive first year posting 52 points in 62 games as an 18 year old. This past year the Nuge struggled slightly but still posted 24 points in 40 games. At only 20 Nugent-Hopkins will provide the team with 10 quality years of NHL production and is likely to only get better with time.

First large gamble - I'm not convinced about RNH. I think he tops out around [undrafted]. Shoulder injuries have to be a concern too. But you *should* get a 10 year player unlike Staal and Kopitar.

Yeah I *think* he's going to be at the very worst an excellent second line playmaker but I'm pretty sure he'll be a legit #1 centre for a long time. Age is appealing for certain because he's probably going to make a leap somewhat soon in terms of talent.

As an aside I'm not thrilled about co-owning because we didn't really get enough time to discuss strategy - literally all we talked about was players below a certain age and focusing on D and C, so I figured RNH fit all the criteria. I dunno - I'm perfectly fine on taking risks on my own behalf, it feels worse to take them on behalf of others/our 'team'

There is also like a 99% chance I'll feel really dumb when someone picks a player that fits better and I just blanked on

For argument purposes, what makes you think that Kopitar might not make it another 10 years?

Certainly not a bad pick but I agree it's a bit of a gamble. That being said it's tough to argue against this pick given age and talent.

i think he's mostly saying that Kopitar won't be ANZE KOPITARRRGH until he's 36

he might not even be in the league, but if he is, he could well be like a 3rd liner player by then

You guys are overrating this ten years thing. Who cares if Kopitar sucks in ten years if you think he gives you the best shot @ winning a cup at some point. Someone like RNH going now is just lol like that team will probably never compete unless they recover really well.

who has said that RNH was a better pick that Kopitar?

i think it's a pretty huge gamble really, and getting 6-8 good years out of Anze is much better

of course he was picked higher, so there's that too

True elite #1 centers are hard to find so I think there's a big difference between getting that for 5 years or for 10. It'll be hard to find another elite center if you're pick starts to show his age after 5 years. Unless your team sucks for a few years you won't get an equal replacement. And teams usually don't trade elite centers.
I'm not convinced RNH is go.na reach that elite level. But if you think he will, then his youth is a major bonus

Here thinking about some things. If anyone wants to trade up from the end of the 1st round you have about 20 minutes.

Kind of a gross spot to draft in based on my board. I'd make you an offer, but I find it really equivalent to the pick I'm taking a few spots down. Your slot must be one of the tougher ones in the draft (or I may be out to lunch).

don't negotiate itt

don't shop your pick when you're on the clock

What's the motivation behind not shopping pick when on clock? Technically isn't his pick available for his full 4 hours? Say your player was picked right before you. At that point you don't like anyone else in that spot, isn't that exactly when you would shop your pick?

bc it slows the draft down unnecessarily ldo

if you think you might wanna move down, start working on it before you're up

He's really good without the puck.

Spoiler:

What better way to begin building the foundation of my franchise than with a left-handed Swedish d-man.

At just 21 years of age, OEL ranked 6th among NHL d-men in TOI last season. I sorted by a couple of [unmentionable] stats and according to those he is an ELIte d-man. He plays in all situations and is Swedish so he'll probably be one of the all-time greats when his career is over.
