On the bright side*, the Flames resigned Treliving to a multi-year deal.

28yo goalie with 64 career NHL starts gets $16.6M/4 from the 'Canes

he should probably thank Cam Talbot for not being complete garbage the last couple years

Carolina is desperate for good goaltending and willing to gamble. They've got good young forwards and good young defensemen, so there's potential there. Last year they actually did a good job of generating shots / preventing shots against, but their goalies are .90X save percentage guys, not gonna cut it.

so a couple more things in Lol Canucks news:

1. Ottawa had a hockey nerd conference this weekend, anyway saw some more stuff about how drafting is basically random. basically there is no real skill involved, and nobody has any real kind of advantage. the only advantage you have give yourself is acquiring more picks. the Canucks were the 2nd worst team in the league this season and sold at the trade deadline, but have just 6 picks in the draft (you start with 7, of course). the Blackhawks have 10. the Canucks also have not acquired any extra picks for the next 2 drafts.

2. two dmen they drafted are apparently not being signed, and will lost. think Canucks Army had them as the team's 9th & 14th best prospects as of a couple months ago, now gone for nothing. but hey who needs them, this organization is plenty deep, right? good stuff.

3. so not only did they lose Tryamkin, and two of their better D prospects for nothing, it would actually kinda hurt at this point if Vegas decides to take Luca Sbisa in the expansion draft. he's not very good, but he's an experienced 27yo NHL dman who can play 20mpg for an expansion (or lottery) team. and he only has 1 year left on his contract, so it's not any kind of commitment, just plugs a hole and helps them reach the salary floor.

so they could very easily be looking at a depth chart like...

LD RD
Edler Tanev
Hutton Gudbranson
Pedan Stecher
Juolevi Biega
Brisebois Subban

(oh and most of the fans seem to want to trade Edler, who has a NTC, and/or Tanev, moving either ... would have pretty hilarious results)

somehow one of the most inept defense groups in the league just got even worse

would bet good money on Subban being traded, for a LD if they lose Sbisa, for a forward if they don't

I have to say, when Jake Dotchin gets seriously injured by in the future, I will not be at all surprised or feel the slightest remorse. How many more serious injuries are they going to let him commit?

oh yeah, forgot to mention the reason i brought this up, because the guy who drafted Jake Virtanen over William Nylander & Nikolaj Ehlers, etc and Olli Juolevi over Matthew Tkachuk, Clayton Keller, etc fancies himself a DRAFT GURU, and as such can do more with fewer picks than his rivals. no really, he actually says **** like that.

[was looking for this tweet from someone decent saying they didn't have Juolevi in their top-10 last year, when i found this:]

Quote:
(((Corey Pronman)))‏ @coreypronman
Here was my top 10 in 2014:
1. Ekblad 2. Bennett 3. Nylander 4. Reinhart 5. Ehlers 6. Fiala 7. Draisaitl 8. Dal Colle 9. Kapanen 10. Fleury
[no Virtanen in Pronman's top-10 from 2014 lol]

and it doesn't even occur to Benning that if he's such a great drafter, supposedly, it might be a good thing to have more picks. you can make even more great choices! you know, leverage your alleged advantage? but no, he's REALLY ****ing dumb...

Look, not to be rude, but Jim Benning talks and sounds exactly like Kevin from The Office. Just based on that alone, I want a different GM.

obv placing a high premium on skating, and tbf, there aren't many elite players who skate as poorly as Draisaitl
(and i think he has improved in that area since the draft, also something that not many accomplish)

and CP said he was spooked by Draisaitl's age relative to the pool

but let's not get off topic here ... LOLOLOL BENNING!!!

Wonder if drafting has always been random or the early 90s wings European scouting was so far ahead of the curve? I'd imagine it's a fairly even playing field with all the scouting networks in place now

The Jets tried drafting all sorts of Russians in the 80s and 90s. There were a few successes, like Zhamnov, Korolev, Khabibulin, and the lovable Igor Ulanov, but Segei Bautin was one of the better ones, which is really bad. He was bad.

ya think the stuff i was seeing was saying that some of these studies went back to 1990, and drafting is something like 75% luck / 25% skill

and i would say that holds true of most of the great picks over the years, they all seem to have some bizarre story behind them

e.g. read some article the other day about Datsyuk, and unless i'm misremembering it said something to the effect that the Wings scout was only on to him bc he got snowed in to some remote Russian town so went and caught an extra game that he wasn't planning on, and during that he was blown away by PD, and the rest is history. also the Wings took chances on players like him & HZ (who were like 130lbs midgets at draft time) in peak clutch&grab era, and kinda lucked out a little that they made it.

good scouting in underserved markets made a difference too. Wings & Canucks both had good Swedish scouts that gave some great advice over the years. that's probably the 25%, idk.

yeah seems to be what ppl are saying

though maybe teams are bringing back the 25% through statistical analysis

saw the Caps hired some bloggers the other day, Garret Hohl‏'s company operating out of Vancouver, which includes more Canucks Army writers i think
(which if true, would mean that 3 NHL teams are now employing ppl from that site)

I'm officially part of the off-season now. Time to fire AV and prep for the draft/free agemcy/expansion.

Fire AV
Execute Staal
Fire AV again
Buy out Girardi
If AV is still hanging around punch him in the mouth and fire him again....oh, and tell him to take Tanner Glass with him.

think AV is a good coach, but yeah he does some dumb stuff too

not sure if he knows that guys Girardi, Staal & Glass suck or not

with Girardi & Staal, that's just kind of the hand he's been dealt by The Ghost of Slats

In some ways they did, and Corsi says so, but that is besides the point when it comes to evaluating AV.

He is stubborn to a fault. Does not assess talent well and refuses to adjust. Stall and Glass being on the ice for the tying goal in Game 5 is a fireable offense on its own merits.

His decisions cost them games.
