According to racist reports, if CarPalm retires, Arians, trying to distance himself from the phonetic pronunciation of his name, is interested in either trading up for DWatson or signing Tyrod.

Might not be an actual 1st...might be a package of picks worth more than a 1st, but they're going to get a nice haul, regardless of how it's structured.
Jimmy's college film was bad but he is a type who needs several years of development first.

god that would be a lol bears thing to do. Yeah trading for patriots backup QB's, when has that worked out for anyone? Bledsoe/Mallett/Cassel/who else?

Think everybody but Cle/Chi is in win now mode. I'm having a hard time coming up with another team except mayyyyybe rams?. I guess Phi is fine with just progress. Everyone else is at least trying to make the playoffs.

Hoyer, O'Connell...

O'Connell wasn't traded by the pats. Since it's the NFL, he had a decent few years in the league despite being cut in one year as a third rounder and is a NFL QB coach now.

Hoyer wasn't traded by the pats either.

I was just naming other Brady backups who went elsewhere to increase the sample size. Whether they were traded or not is irrelevant to whether they were any good at football.

Mallet was traded in 2014 for the 243rd overall pick in 2016 (if he had played over 40% of snaps it would have gone from a 7th to a 6th).

I guess it's lucky they got anything for Mallett, his ROI--3rd round pick in 2010 to 7th round pick 6 years later was horrible.

I'm only looking at trades here so if you were adding sample size, I guess it'd have to be guys like Schaub or Cutlah or hell why bother at this point, this list is already depressing. Guess it's pretty simple--don't trade real capital for QB's other teams don't want. If you wanna torch a 7th whatever, but not a useful one.

yeah what was the last time a backup QB got traded to another team and became an all-pro? never?

I assumed the premise was that people just look better when they're on the Patriots so they're overvalued.

Schaub trade to Texans for 2 2nds was actually a good trade for Texans.

Alex Smith to Chiefs for a 2nd & 3rd was an excellent trade for Chiefs.

Cards trade of 2 6ths for CarPalm & a 7th was an excellent trade.

Favre
Steve Young

Other good traded QBs: Mark Brunell, Steve McNair

Seahawks trading down in 1st & giving up a 3rd to get Matt Hasselbeck was a pretty good trade, too.

KC gave up the 12th pick for Trent Green.

Aaron Brooks was another Favre backup traded for, not overly good but he started for multiple seasons.

I don't know if Ty Detmer was traded for but I believe Doug Pederson was (to serve as the nominal starter McNabb's rookie year). I think Detmer might've been an expansion pick but regardless, GB's backup QB was always on the move.

Favre would never have made it in the twitter/impatience era (see JFF). Also, ask the Jets about it.

Palmer is a point for the argument, not against--he was a major bust trade for Oak vs Cin.

Schaub/Cutler were "good deals" but neither panned out.
Smith is headed that way too. If you're on a team that can't win playoff games and you're the guy who gets blamed for it...

Perhaps a better premise is everyone the patriots don't want anymore--you shouldn't trade for them. That list instead moves to Seymour/Collins/Moss.

Trent Green trade actually seems quite good looking at that draft. STL drafted Damione Lewis who was a mediocre DT for the next 5 years for Rams, & Trent Green had 5.5 pretty ok seasons as the Chiefs starter. & the best QB taken in that draft after the 1st pick was probably AJ Feeley...

Smiff has gone 41-20 in the regular season the last 4 seasons. The Indy playoff game he helped put up 44 (his team blew a 28 point lead), and his team lost 45-44. He won a game against a bad Houston playoff team; and gave NE a decent run for it's money on the road. He was okay against Pitt this year. While I don't think Smith is that great, getting a league average starting QB for less than a first round pick isn't a bad trade. 9ers did absolutely **** with those picks.

Schaub was a league average QB for a while. Not sure how it didn't pan out, he wasn't a HOFer but he wasn't bad till the end of his stay in Houston.

Wilfork has been playing decently for longer than I expected given both the Patriots' track record here and the Texans' track record of being three years behind on their information.

Wasn't AJ Feeley traded for a second too?

Kevin Kolb fetched like two seconds, right?

Schaub deal was totally fine. It makes me sad that Cutler was thrust into a situation where he never developed further, because his last season in Denver was a real step forward, improving his efficiency while taking on substantially higher volume. (He did end up being the starter for eight years in Chicago, so even saying if it's a "bad" trade is hard.)

Well, they did use those picks to trade for more picks & get Carlos Hyde among others. But I agree with everything else you said.

Well, I know it's not necessarily his job to get tackles, but Wilfork had 10 more combined tackles in his last year in NE than he did in his two years in Houston, & I don't think the Pats are sad they didn't pay him 2/$9m.

Yup on Feeley. Eagles used the Feeley pick to draft WR Reggie Brown.

Kolb was traded for a 2nd + DRC. Eagles used that 2nd to trade back & draft Vinnie Curry & Brandon Boykin.

McDaniels may be called to testify in Hernandez' new case:

Quote:
“The Commonwealth alleges the defendant sent a text message to Mr. McDaniels showing him another tattoo that he received at the same time from tattoo artist David Nelson with the letters ‘CBS/WBS/IWBTG,’” the motion reads. “According to the Commonwealth, it expects Mr. McDaniels to testify [if called] as to the meaning of those letters.”
Go at it.
