I've seen a few reports of this, too. Not from any of the big names, though.

Didn't rivers say a while back if the chargers move he wants out? I believe it.

pretty sure one of the conditions of him resigning with the chargers was that they weren't moving to LA

why not maximize your chances for success as a HC in the long run by going into a good situation instead of the GM-less, QB-less 49ers? McDaniels already turned it down, as well as even Tom Cable, that's got to mean something.

I'm reading that he'll make a decision next week on whether or not to accept.

I get that there are only 32 of these jobs in the world and only 4-6 come up each year... I just have to think Shanahan's stock is high enough now that he'd be able to pick the situation he wants, and the 9ers look like a total reset from here.

I don't know why he wouldn't want to stay in a good situation and stay the hot young coordinator for another year and let a team with a better QB come available (Indy?)

...No disrespect SRM

The problem with waiting for a good job is that they all go to terrible coordinators who misss the playoffs because NFL teams can't wait 3 weeks for the actual decent candidates to be free for some inexplicable reason.

Also it assumes shanahan is going to be better than other options next year. All things being equal I'm sure the Colts would rather McDonalds than shanahan

McDaniels bowing out of the 9ers job is a sneaky way of telling the league he's matured a bit and is showing patience for a much better opportunity. Second gig fails are longer lasting.

he's itching to jump to HC but in his second stint under BB's wing BB has reminded him to wax on, wax off.

I could be totally dreaming this up from a long ago article I read, but I remember Josh McD returning to the Pats and BB giving him a huge binder on what to do to become a head coach in this league. Probably fairy tale, but based heavily in reality

Worth mentioning that Sweezy was another guy who started at DL and they moved to OL.

I guess that convinced Cable that he could do that for the entire OL. Beware beginner's luck.

Because you can't guarantee the opportunity to become a HC again and because the 49ers' situation is actually a good gamble for a first-time coach.

Think about it: If the team does poorly, they're such a dysfunctional mess to begin with that it probably won't reflect badly on you. If the team does well, you look like a god damn genius.

Trivia time:

Four receivers this season saw 120 or more targets and finished with a catch rate above 70%. Can you name them?

How many 5-11 coaches are kept around because their owners correctly recognize that their organization is a putrid mess that has 0-16 equity every year if not for this brilliant coach?

Pete Carroll was fired twice. Mike Shanahan and Tom Coughlin were both fired and then won two Super Bowls with another team.

It's relatively rare for a coach to land his first NFL job and succeed and stay there a long time.

My biggest hurdle is that I don't know how many receivers in general receive that many targets. 6 targets a game isn't that many I suppose.

Off the top of my head I'd go

Baldwin
Boldin
Diggs
Fitz

Landry has to be one not mentioned yet. Larry seems like a lock. Probably Brown. Between Diggs and Beasley (lol) but not sure if either got that many targets.
