Fouts actually tried to be smart about it. He is basically using VORP, and saying "Ray Guy punter VORP is ridiculously high enough and all the great QB's are close in value and I can get one later in the draft".

until you look at Ray Guy and realize he is just a regular good punter (ie, not clear at all he is better than Shane Lechler or...10 other punters) and the weirdness it takes to think that all the great QB's are basically the same. or consider how great a Punter would need to be for him to go #1 overall (somebody who could pin the other team inside the 5 100% of the time from anywhere on the field?)

Only a tiny handful of guys who entered the league before 1985 are worth drafting. Marino is the only pre-85 player I'd take in the top 5 and LT is the only pre-85 defender I can think of who's worth a first round pick. Both are legends in their own time period but might also be even more valuable in the current game.

Jerry Rice entered the league in 1985 and he'd be truly incredible in the modern game, too.
