i fully expected to pick him this round, and people go, 'huh? who?'..especially the younger owners..
he was a hometown boy. has a club named after him (well, HAD a club, shutdown by police), i went to his football camp when i was in high school, absolutely a beast.
what a shame...

Re: NFL Modern Era Draft: Discussion Thread
btw, I just want to clear something up on the intended meaning of the rules. I can't police this in any way, but I think it'd be cool if we went by some sort of honor system....
When talking to people via PM, I've always maintained that its ok to ask about specific players, but its not ok to flat out ask who you should take. For example, as the offensive linemen thin out, many people might be tempted to PM Needle and say "Hey man, I have no clue who to take. You got any sleepers?". Imo doing this would directly violate the intentions of the rules and should not be done. With that said, it'd be perfectly fine to ask him "Hey man. I'm thinking of drafting Player X, but I'm a bit worried about his weakness at XXXX and how that'd affect my team. Any thoughts there?"

Yeah, I agree with this. For the record I've never PM'd Needle and been like "OMG I WANT AN O-LINEMAN WTF DO I PICK". I've usually decided on one and am just checking to make sure he's not a fat overrated piece of crap. I've mostly gotten lucky to find players that were on his radar.

I'm probably the youngest owner in the draft, I just kind of got lucky that I'm a Vikings fan and a huge sports degenerate so I knew about him. I've pretty much given up on the idea of shocking or controversial picks, since everyone in the draft seems to be thinking along the same lines.

Re: NFL Modern Era Draft: Discussion Thread
Doug C. Smith-Center-Round 11 Pick 327
im not going to pretend like i have any idea who this guy was. But apparently he was a pretty sick center. Undrafted out of bowling green, he signed with the Rams and stayed there is whole career. Eventually becoming the starter in 1980 at right guard. In 81 he split time playing guard and tackle, before being moved to Center. Between 1984 and 1989 he made EVERY pro bowl @ center.
Thats 6 pro bowls.. people, in the 11th round!!.
He combined with Jackie Slater to give the La Rams one of the best OL's in the NFL. Behind him and slater, Eric Dickerson set the NFL single season record for yards rushing. Slater said this about Smith in his HOF induction speech
Quote:
|
Doug Smith, a man that I played with the longest - 14 years at the Rams from Bowling Green. Doug Smith was a man who always encouraged us to do the best we could, and always pointed us in the direction of Jesus Christ and I really appreciate Doug Smith.
|
So yeah, he also seems like a good lockerroom guy too!
And her is a picture of his daugther. Decent looking !? maybe?

Re: NFL Modern Era Draft: Discussion Thread
Round 11, Pick #335: Clayton Matthews
It seems as if this pick is being universally praised in the discussion thread, which to be honest kinda sucks in that I don't have much to argue about....
He was a 4 time probowler including 3 straight years. I'll probably take him in the middle of that stretch. He was a great college player(USC HOFer I believe), went in the 1st round of the draft, and had a tremendously long and stories career.
I believe that hes better than a number of OLBs taken already(there perhaps that will stir up something for me to debate here). I think that getting him in round 11 is tremendous value. I also think that despite not taking many defensive players early that I have all of the makings of a good D: Elite pass rusher who is also good vs the run, stud linebacker, and 2 very solid CBs.
I also love the versatility that Clay gives me. I probably will have to play the 4-3 with Julius Peppers, but Clay is good in any system. He can play in a 3-4 and rush the passer(12 sacks one year), he can play in a 4-3, he can play on either side, and hes very good in coverage from everything I've read.
Team so far:
Offense
QB: Tony Romo
RB: Emmitt Smith
WRs: Torry Holt, Jerry Rice
LT: Ryan Clady
RG: Bill Fralic
TE: Jason Witten
Defense
DE: Julius Peppers
CBs: Mikes Haynes, Darrelle Revis
OLB: Clayton Matthews

Re: NFL Modern Era Draft: Discussion Thread
This is going to be way to defend considering...but I wouldn't put Matthews ahead of Kevin Hardy. I know I know...a Jaguar ZoMg needle is insane. But in actuality he is considered the greatest Jaguar defensive player ever. He was the leader of the #1 scoring defense in 1999. But...meh.

Re: NFL Modern Era Draft: Discussion Thread
But you picked Mathis and Stroud much earlier, is he really better than both of them?
