I haven't seen him play, but how is losing a backup that will only play in blowouts, or if Brees is resting at the end of the season, bc the Saints have their playoff spot locked up, a significant injury? (not trying to be snotty either)

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora has been told by team sources from the Rams, Panthers, Cowboys, Ravens, Raiders, and Jaguars that they are in no way interested in free agent Chad Ochocinco [...] That leaves the Bills and Dolphins as plausible destinations, but La Canfora gets the impression that Buffalo doesn't think the 34-year-old has much to offer...
|
@ Gonso, I had no idea Buffalo was even considering Chad (or visa versa) Probably would've been worth the very little risk to bring him on, since they have like no WRs after Stevie/Nelson. And Nelson's definitely not a #2, so Chad would've had plenty of chances to prove himself. He must be finished, though, if a team that is strongly lacking in WRs wouldn't even give him a shot.
Damn, it would be so awesome to lol @ chad all year too.

It's fairly significant right now, since Brees isn't in camp. They need someone to run things in OTA's and stuff.

Re: NFL 2012 Offseason Thread
Fair enough. I guess. I just don't see OTA's being very important. (it's good for rooks, i suppose, and players getting back in to shape)
But, I also fully expect Brees to be in training camp.

There's a small chance Brees holds out.

Is brees squabbling over a couple million or are the saints refusing to give him the amount of years he wants or something?

Well it's not important right now technically, bc there's nothing going on now until training camp. Saints skipped their last day of mini-camp to go and play golf.
Also, BB faxed interim coach Joe Vitt about joint Saints-Pats practices in Foxboro in August, prior to their preseason game (they did it in 2010, was a huge success). That would make for some fun press conferences.

Until Brees signs a contract, I'm not making any assumptions on his availability for the season.

They're more than likely waiting on an arbitration ruling about whether he's considered a a first year franchise player (as the Saints contend) or a second year franchise player (as Brees/agent contend) since that effects leverage somewhat. The wording of the CBA is vague regarding if the franchise designation from year to year has to be used by the same team in order to trigger the higher payday for a second year franchise player, as the last time Brees was franchised it was by the Chargers and not the Saints. This ruling should come sometime in late June.

That's fair, but in all likelihood you're ****ed with anyone other than Brees, right? The dropoff from Daniel to whoever is 3rd string is probably much less than Brees to Daniel.

Most likely. Daniel is on his 4th year with the team, though, and would be entering his 3rd year as the #2 guy. The coaches obviously feel he's capable enough to keep him around that long, so the dropoff may not be as steep as us fans think.

The wording really isn't that vague at all. When read by anyone other than a lawyer, it comes across as meaning "franchised by the same team" not just in general.
If he does hold out, just tank for the #1 pick. Worked ok before...

Coughlin and Reese were less than pleased:
“I could explain it but I don’t want to explain it because it’s really irrelevant at this point,’’ general manager Jerry Reese said on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Asked why the Giants didn’t simply keep Ballard protected on the roster, Coughlin snapped.
“Don’t ask me those questions,” he said. “I’m not the ... I don’t have the answers for you. We’re all disappointed, that’s all.’’
