Disagree. There are 32 basketball games, of course there are gonna be plenty of good games.
But, there were slightly fewer good games than normal, and on top of that nothing that made me get out of my chair and yell and run around the room, which is the whole point of this thing. No epic upsets, no buzzer beaters.
It's march MADNESS, not march appreciate good basketball. That's what the NBA is for. The purpose of this tournament is to see a bunch of kids from middle of bum**** nowhere, for one moment in their athletic careers, reach the pantheon of greatness where they can be remembered forever just for winning one or two games.
Think about it - in every other sport, you have to be the best or the champion to be remembered forever. And MM has those too - Nova last year, NC State winning and Jim Valvano running around like a madman, Laettner, Warrick, Tyus Edney, etc.... but MM also has heroes like Bryce Drew, GOAT COAST, Steph Curry and the Red Lobster from Davidson, Hampton's coach getting carried off the court, Georgia State's coach falling off his stool when his son hit the game winning dagger, that dude from Northern Iowa ****ing stabbing Kansas in the heart with that three... and so, so many more
Nowhere else can you be immortal just for pulling an upset and not even come close to a title, and that's awesome.
This first round was definitely really, really lacking in Madness. We've still got a few good stories (Northwestern, Wichita/Kentucky, SMC) and lots of potential for crazy games and incredible battles, but a lot of what makes this thing great was missing over the last two days. Today looks like it will be awesome in a different way, and by the way LET'S GO ****ING MOUNTAINEERS
