bob knight won't be involved. Most want nothing to do with Alford, but he is the guy who probably for sure will say yes

why the hell would bob knight have anything to do with an IU hire? he shunned the school decades ago.

Between IU and Illinois, at the very minimum, Tony Bennett is going to get a huge raise

Now you're talking. Anyway, 35 Final Fours between them, Duke and UNC, and no meetups in tourney.

Is whatever kept Alford from taking IU job last time still operating? I would have bet something serious on it. I think Knight vetoed it in terms of still presiding over his former players and influencing them strongly to turn their back on the school, or administration.

Another one shocked me when Kentucky job opened up and Billy D, Pitino protege, passed on it. I did bet on that one.

So, while I'm hot ... Calipari to Pelicans or Lakers soon.

Not sure what you mean. The people in charge when Knight got fired wanted to make sports less important at IU and gave Davis a long-term deal on the cheap after he went 23-12 I believe his first season. The year after that interim year was when people expected them to get Alford. He was still a somewhat hot commodity at the time. Now he hasn't been overly successful over 20+ seasons save for a good run at New Mexico so I'd say him not winning enough is the main thing keeping him from the IU job. Still prob the fav at this point unfortunately.

NC State hired Kevin Keatts, UNC Wilmington coach. Made NCAA last two years in a row.

I know very little about Keatts or UNCW, but this strikes me as a reasonably smart style of hire. Take a chance on an up-and-comer.

they crushed this hire.... i would have been happy if IU got him. great hire

I really hope UMass doesn't hire King Rice, which I'm hearing rumblings of.

Becker from Vermont, Caputo Miami asst, or the Celtics asst that was under Stevens at Butler too would all be better. Rice aint even in my top 5.

We wanted Keatts too but knew he was gonna get bigger offers.

It wasn't the top of my list but like you said this is a smart gamble for once. Great pedigree, successful, room to grow and build what he wants since cupboard should be rather bare. Plus lots of ACC elite coaches getting up there in age. Opportunity exists.

Rather apparent State knew certain guys wouldn't be available like an Archie. Good PR saving yourself the swing and miss embarrassment once again.

would you have said that about alabama football in 2007 when the team had gone 15 years being largely irrelevant?

Then you can say this about any school, just need the coach who knows what he can get the ncaa to look away from and look at his rivals.

Illinois in a simliar boat as Indiana now; only has the one great team here and there, then it's just bleh for too long, but everyone here thinks they should be a top program. It's tough to see a rebound to that level.

If not for that stuff, it would be harder to justify and just more lolcrazy IU fans.
Crean was the goat for academics fwiw

dakich saying done too, at least I think thats what he was referring to. Brian Snow says Indiana AAU coaches dislike Alford, not exactly a great thing.

IU really should be throwing all the money at Billy Donovan
03-18-2017 , 04:22 PM
Illini get Ok St Coach underwood....pretty underwhelming IMO if they were trying to go big.
03-18-2017 , 04:27 PM
Ugh, please not Alford.

The Pierre Pierce situation alone should disqualify him. Beyond that, his actual coaching accomplishments are pretty unspectacular.

Nothing good will come of hiring someone with connections to the Knight era. Let the old men with faded Texas Tech bumper stickers die off.

Brad Underwood great hire
03-18-2017 , 08:02 PM
Totally despise Steve Alford. Hope rumors are true so Iowa has a couple shots at him every year.

so does Underwood coach the Illinois basketball team on Monday in the NIT?
03-18-2017 , 11:52 PM
Come on Iowa State

Cant believe Musselman is still Nevada's coach. Probably trying to squeeze us boosters just a little more before he bolts to Cal.

Also, for you ***** out there- its time to beat Duke. I remember the freshman Jason Kidd game (1993) like it was yesterday..,god that was epic

Edited because the site filters out the name of the team from South Carolina. wtf
