NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

I did like what little I saw of Exum last night and would like to see him take a step forward this year into a solid player.

The problem with the Jazz is their go to player in crunch time and only real scorer is 49 year old Joe Johnson. They'll win some games and be in the mix but 48 wins is laughable. If the game is close under 6 minutes they're -EV more times than not

I only watched part of the game + highlights, but did you watch the same game? Hill looked quite good and Exum was -18 in 8 minutes. Hood is a great and versatile scorer, and Hayward/Favors didn't play. Once they get back to full strength Johnson will be more of the 6th/7th man and he's fine in that role. Obviously the whole staying healthy thing is a big if but their healthy starting 5 is extremely strong.

Re: NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

They lost a close game to portland, without 2 of their 3 best players

I don't know if my eye test is wrong but half of Portland 3 pointers were contested, the team shot 13/19 on 3, that won't happen every night, and it didn't looked like they scored so much because of a bad defense.

Hood looks like a guy you can give the ball in the last minutes of a game

Yea I don't mean Exum looked good as in he had a great game but looked healthy and moving well and I'm optimistic he can develop into a good player.

Hill I'm more basing over his entire body of work over his career and he was miserable the last 8 minutes when Dame went into beast mode and **** all over him and they finally started doubling Joe Johnson leaving Hill wide open and he bricked it off the backboard

Yeah I thought jazz looked quite good given the circumstances, and Portland ran hot from 3.

Might be a sample size issue there

He had a rough couple offensive possessions when the game was close at the end, but missing shots happens. I was more concerned with him over-dribbling than anything.

Still, though...

Portland definitely ran hot but they have DAME. Rest of that time stinks of mediocrity but DAME

I also thought Exum looked good. He looked athletic as opposed to a non-explosive gangly kid with a weird pot belly.

Re: NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

Is having a 'isolation scorer for crunch time' overrated or properly rated?

I'm really not that concerned if I am the Jazz - between Hayward, Favors and Hood they might not have an elite iso guy, but they're got a pretty good amount of firepower. All three of those guys can make a bucket happen if they need to.

Re: NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

I think having an isolation scorer for crunch time would be overrated if teams would play more optimally at the end of games. Since they don't, it is definitely important. Late game offense was an issue for Utah last year too.

Re: NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

mjw,

"Teams play sub-optimally" might be true, but we should also remember normal team offense is optimized for something like "get highest EV shot in <24s".

End of game is more like "get highest EV shot at exactly 7-9 seconds from now."

It does basically come down to who can get to the rim and finish over people or has a pretty solid step-back / off-the-dribble jumper. Running a whole bunch of motion designed to maybe get a guy open for a spot up 3 loses a lot of its luster when game theory dictates that the person shouldn't shoot a 3 anyway.

I don't think Quinn knows how to play suboptimally tbh.

Yeah, NBA truthers have to think Spurs/Warriors last night was some massive level to keep the casual fan interested in this regular season.

I saw some dude beaking in the game day thread about how Hill isn't good or a "difference maker" and thought he looked great in game 1. When you have Hood/Hayward a PG who can shoot 3's & defend multiple positions is just perfect (unless you can have a star). He's not an all-star by any means, but he's a good player.

The Jazz, ftmp, outplayed a solid well coached WC team on the road without its top 2 players. Assuming they stay healthy they should be fine.

Yeah Jazz are easily a 50 win team with health, probably a 47ish win team with the injuries.

Agreed. I have them as the 5th seed in the west but the 2nd best team. 50-1 to win the west is great value imo.

Re: NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

Hill's D versatility especially makes him great for the Jazz. He can guard the 1 as well as anyone and can provide easy switching on 2s. Big in the Western Conference where guards are the best player on a lot of teams and the only 1/2 offensive threat on a few of the good teams (OKC/HOU/MEM). Consistently shooting 35+% from 3P is just icing on top. He's like the PG version of Millsap/Horford (worse at PG than those guys are at their position of course) wrt being able to do everything above average but nothing flashy enough to make people EMBRACE DEBATE and say "wow look at that guy!"

League is going to be awesome this year. Even the Jazz are exciting now that they got George Hill.

Hood looked good last night but I'm not ready to elevate him into that crunchtime shot maker guy. He also took a ridiculous ill advised pull up three in transition at an awful point in the game last night when Joe Johnson was doing the 58 year old man back down and scoring at will

Cool video.

However, how true a statement is that? I mean, I'm in from the ground floor this year and ready to enjoy the whole thing. But how "awesome" can a league be where much of its competitive outcome is a mere formality?

meh... it's up to the fans to find their own enjoyment. Following the league might not be interesting, but, say you're a Utah fan, the quest to finish 4th, 3rd, 2nd (!) is all exciting. There is more than just winning it all.

I'm a Grizzlies fan and jonesing all day. I can see them anywhere between 35 and 47 wins at 97% CI. That's a whole lot of mystery. Winning it all isn't an option, but I will have many discussions about the achievements in that 35 to 47 range.
