Since we had tragedy hit one of our own, I figured an update would be appropriate.

As always, please remember that many "charities" are for-profit scams, with very little money actually going to the intended cause. Please check the appropriate venues such as http://www.charitynavigator.org/ to make sure your charity is legit.

Shipping $100 to this charity that takes kids with terminal illness on trips/adventures/etc.

I'm going to bump this since I had an idea today that we could get a lot of people to contribute to. I was thinking of doing a charity of the day where everyone would donate a small amount to a charity. I was going to pledge $1 a day (since I'm broke), but after some quick research, it seems that some charities have a minimum donation (Red Cross is $10 for an online donation, for example). So then I thought, maybe one charity a week, but I want more coverage than that.

So, I propose we will have two charities of the week. I'm ironing out the details, but I'll probably use Charity Navigator to decide what charities are worthy. I'm thinking at least 3 stars, preferably 90%+ go to program expenditures, preferably less than 5% admin expenses, and preferably an accountability score of more than 90.

Anyway, each Monday I'll pick two charities, and we'll donate to those two charities. I'll put in $10 a week, so this covers most minimum donations (if not a dollar minimum, many have a $5 minimum). If the minimum is higher than $5, we can divert the money so that one person is donating $10 to one charity and another person is donating $10 to the other charity, for example.

I'll probably make a spreadsheet on Google that anyone donating can edit and we can see how much each charity is receiving every week. I want this to be for an entire year, and next June I'll pick (or we can vote on) the top 10 charities that were donated to and those will receive an additional donation from everyone participating.

Anyway, I want to basically know who is interested right now. I am thinking of having the first 2 charities picked on Monday. My goal is to have everyone who can donate that week have it done by Friday so we have a routine and can see if there is a week where a charity is being neglected.
