Think Ainge views the last few years as a nice little team while the rebuild was going on, but basically knows IT can never be a major piece on a contending team. Imagine him vs Wall/Beal in the next rd 2?
He definitely isn't getting re-signed by the C's for big $.
To your last part, why not? They got him as a throw in, he's played an an MVP/All-NBA level and yes he has his issues but other than Horford, do the Celts have a bunch of high paid players of which Horford really isn't worth the money he's getting paid.
They'll be fortunate to get a top 4 pick at worst this year in a really good draft. They can choose to keep the player and benefit for the discounted costs that a rookie player can have especially at the top of the lottery. While PG/Butler seem like good ideas short term, long term I think the benefit is huge to keep the player at the top of the draft and how it'll make paying the rest of the team.
IT would be a great 3rd best player and solid 2nd best player on a team. They really need another scorer on the Celtics, Horford, Bradley, Crowder, Smart ain't going to cut it against elite squads.
