He's just never been on a great squad and even when the Clippers have been good they're repeatedly dealt with serious injuries in the playoffs. Similarly they're in the same conference as the Spurs and Warriors so it's going to be tough to make it to the finals unless things bounce well.
Don't forget he played for Vinny Del for a few years and then Rivers who we know is overrated.
Blake always gets hurt. Deandre is limited. Crawford is AIDs in the playoffs.
Nobody even saying he should have won a title. Putting him in a class of one of the best pgs ever or perennially a top 5 league player and never gotten to a conference finals, that is very damning on him. Sure all those things are factors but he has never once gotten past the second round. You might not be able to lay blame on a top MLB or NFL player for that but a guy twelve years in to his NBA career? I don't even no of any comps? What top 25-40 guy in the modern era never once managed to reach a conference finals? And being a point guard?
He doesn't deserve all the blame. It's insane the clippers have never gotten to the WCF since he has been there. I think he deserves a significant portion of the blame for that.
Maybe New Orleans has a knack for drafting super talented players who never get to a conference final. It's not like people are saying Paul is a top 30 player of a top 100 all time. You have people saying he is the greatest pg of all time and a top 5 player now. It is impossible to put him in that air when he has been on such disappointing teams in the playoffs. That his numbers are pretty much the same in the playoffs is probably part of the problem. The playoffs are not just an extension of the regular season. Should his numbers be better? Worse? Don't know but they should be different and reflect the reality of a team in the playoffs. I suspect his personality doesn't benefit a team much in the playoffs. You have to be able to push your teammates and not alienate them.
It's not like there have been 2-3 super teams in the WC for the last six years that blocked him from getting to a conference finals.
Maybe everything will change in Houston, we shall see. To be honest though, I haven't even factored in Dantoni who is one of my least favorite "winning" coaches ever.
