That has about as much relevance as this.
I'll clarify. I don't often listen to radio at home but I hear the radio almost every day at say shopping malls or WE. I don't really pay attention to what I'm listening to but when I do realize what I'm listening to it's the beatles about 100 times more than Elvis.

Is this relevant in your opinion? Is this substantially different from your experience?

Sure John Paul Jones is a great musician, but probably could have gotten him much later.

I con't understand this pick at all.

As I see it he brings pretty much nothing to the table that you can't get from some studio musician and you are allowed any number of studio musicians correct?

the one thing with Dr. Dre though when comparing him to the other hip-hop artists taken so far, is that he's a GOAT-level commercial producer (don't really have a clue how he's regarded critically). that's probably his main value, much more than being a MC (doesn't he only have like 2-3 albums of his own, not counting his old group?). so that's something pretty huge to build around, from there his owner can just start taking lesser industry talent and getting more out of it.

maybe i'm wrong about this, but i think hip-hop producers are worth more than those in any other genre...actually, probably pop producers are #1. but you get my point... (but obv there are other great producers out there)

yeah, also don't understand JPJ being picked by that owner over another undrafted bassist, lol.

Forgot about the John Paul Jones pick - honestly, he could likely been had in the double-pick rounds.

Simone was a reach only because she would have likely lasted a few more rounds, but we're starting to enter the territory where the second tier is exponentially larger than the first tier, so it's tempting to grab who you want because of increasing uncertainty of how long any one artist will last.

TSC and I discussed her real briefly. She would have fit well with our studio and we figured she'd go soon. It's probably a fine pick but I think I would have preferred someone else similar.

Lol, so you made a dumb claim and then weren't able to back it up at all. I didn't see that one coming .

I backed up my claim. If you don't understand what I said that's your problem.

Maybe you missed my post after the Dre pick, but imo he's horrible overrated as a producer and he's given way too much credit for other people's work. He generally gets the "Exec Producer" title for a lot of the records, even though he only produces one or two (or none!) songs.

I guess people don't care, so whatever

There are a few guys available who are insane value. Rest assured I will snap one of them up with my next pick.

+1 to both of these. I think people are outsmarting themselves by avoiding some of the more obvious picks. You can take your more obscure pick later. There's plenty of those people to go around. Passing up on talent that won't be there later is a mistake.

There's several undrafteds that I can't believe are still available. Most of the picks so far are fine but some are just so LOL.

Good morning ladies. Or afternoon I guess..

Anyways, quickie thoughts.

Cash - he was one of two that i wanted for my next pick. I spent almost an hour yesterday reading about him and listening to his songs. I really liked his Hurt cover (amateur).

Berry - eh, honestly, I don't know too much about Berry. I've heard the name and probably a couple songs but not much else. looks like a stud pick from wiki though.

Taylor - JT.

JP Jones - HEY! That's my LZ.

I think the past three picks were all reaches, but I think they are all super talented. However almost everyone in this draft is super talented.

I agree with loveinvain re: Elvis. I think in a lot of ways he is comparable to Monroe in the hollywood draft. He is relatively one dimensional, he was an icon in an era where it was possible to be a huge icon because art wasn't nearly as splintered, he was groundbreaking, but his stuff hasn't aged that well. From a pure talent standpoint he is probably pretty comparable to Justin Timberlake or some other elite pop stars, I don't think the world we are drafting in should reward timing, which Elvis benefited a ton from.

Someone mentioned this earlier (might have been you), but Justin Timberlake managing to pretty much be an icon in the music industry today(with how splintered it is) is really damn impressive.

there's one person that if i was in this would easily draft in the first five rounds but i could easily see him not being drafted, but there's seriously one other that could easily have been a first round pick. that said, i don't know who the latter would really work with as studios stand so far

I think Cash and Berry are definitely the best value picks today. JPJ probably the worst. I don't feel qualified to evaluate the rappers.

From my personal POV, it seems like genuine great talent is being ignored too much for specialists and people who do one thing particularly well but aren't as innovative, influential, or historically relevant-- as necessary, if you will. I'm not saying that's in the rules or anything, but I see a significant number of studios doing things that I wouldn't consider the optimal way to build a studio.

Nath,

When the goal is to maximize the combination of commercial and critical success, I think it's pretty reasonable to expect that people will draft talent that is elite at the marketing side (Elvis, JayZ, Mariah, Madonna) higher than where their pure musical abilities might suggest they would otherwise be drafted.
