Dave Portner, aka Avey Tare
Avey Tare met Animal Collective's Deakin (Josh Dibb), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) in high school. For years, the four of them swapped homemade recordings, shared musical ideas and performed in different group configurations. Avey Tare recorded the Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished album with Panda Bear, and initially released the recording on the band's own Animal label in 2000. The album is commonly referred to as the first official Animal Collective release, with Tare writing the music and Panda Bear providing the 'perfect drums' (as cited in the album's credits)
After high school, Avey Tare and Geologist moved to New York City to attend NYU and Columbia University, respectively. Panda Bear and Deakin eventually moved to NYC, and the band became more collaborative in nature. They finally settled on the name "Animal Collective".
Although the band's output is, as their name suggests, a highly collaborative effort, with no typical 'frontman', Avey Tare has been cited by the other members as being the 'primary songwriter' of the group. On all of the releases after 'Spirit They've Gone Spirit They've Vanished', Tare has written at least half of the material, and for the albums 'Feels', 'Strawberry Jam' and 'Merriweather Post Pavilion', contributed around three quarters of the songs that made it onto the album.

Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear
Lennox and Avey Tare are the only members who have contributed to all of the band's releases. In addition to singing, Lennox mainly played drums in Animal Collective's live performances, seeing Stewart Copeland as the biggest influence on his drumming style. But, since the 2007 releases of Panda Bear's Person Pitch and Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, he has focused more on using samples and other electronics in their shows.
At the age of 20 he finished his debut album Panda Bear. It was released in 1998 on Soccer Star Records. After focusing more on touring and recording with Animal Collective, he released the follow-up Young Prayer in 2004 and the highly acclaimed third solo album Person Pitch in 2007. About his fast working style, Lennox says:
“I get impatient writing songs, I can't spend more than a couple of hours before I get frustrated. So I got to kind of spit it out real fast. My favorite songs are the ones where I worked really really fast on, when it comes all out in like two hours or something.”
After being told that they sound like Syd Barret era Pink Floyd and early Grateful Dead and reading a review of a Climax Golden Twins record around 11th and 12th grade, they started to discover psychedelic and sound music like Noggin as well as Krautrock related bands like Silver Apples and Can. Meanwhile, Dibb had introduced Lennox to Portner and Weitz and the four of them played music in different combinations and often solo, producing lots of home recordings, swapping them and sharing ideas. Using a drum machine for the first time, Weitz and Portner started a duo called Wendy Darling, whose sound was inspired by soundtracks of horror movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Shining, especially György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Jerry Fulton Cantrell is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known for his work with the grunge/metal band Alice in Chains, as lead guitarist, backing and co-lead vocalist, and co-lyricist. He has written or co-written every song in the Alice In Chains catalog except for "Queen of the Rodeo", "Hate to Feel", "Angry Chair", and "Head Creeps". He performs lead vocals on his solo projects, and is part of Alice in Chains' harmonizing dual-vocal style.
Alice in Chains has received seven Grammy nominations. The band's first Grammy nomination occurred when "Man in the Box" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1992. Alice in Chains has also received Grammy nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance for the band's 1992 album, Dirt, "I Stay Away" from 1994's Jar of Flies, "Grind" and "Again" from the band's 1995 self-titled album, and the 1999 track "Get Born Again". The music video for the song "Would?", Alice in Chains' contribution to the 1992 film, Singles, won the award for Best Video from a Film at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards.
Cantrell noted in an interview that he was "raised on country music" as a youth and that he admires the emotion conveyed in the genre. He also considers himself "half Yankee and half redneck." However, hard rock music caught Cantrell's interest predominantly, and he bought his first guitar in his mid teens. It wouldn't be until the age of 17, however, that he began seriously playing the instrument. Cantrell would later cite groups and musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Heart, Black Sabbath, and Queensrÿche as major influences.
In July 2006, British hard rock magazine Metal Hammer awarded Cantrell the title of Riff Lord, at its annual Golden Gods Awards show, held at the London Astoria. He was apparently thrilled at winning the title, over several famous artists such as Slash, James Hetfield, and Jimmy Page.
He's also collaborated with new labelmate James Hetfield in the past, and has put out 3 decent solo albums before reforming Alice in Chains with a new lead singer.

Nigel Godrich is a recording engineer, record producer and musician. He is best known for his work with the English alternative rock band Radiohead, and is sometimes informally credited as the "sixth member" of Radiohead due to his longtime collaboration with the Oxford band. He has gained notice for helping to define Radiohead's distinct sound, which established them as one of the more acclaimed rock bands in the world during the 1990s and 2000s. He is younger than all members of Radiohead (except Jonny Greenwood), which is a rare situation among producers for popular acts. When working on OK Computer at improvised studios without the close supervision of longtime veterans or record labels, both he and the band learned as they went along, ultimately crediting the open process with the record's success.He has also been a member of lead singer Thom Yorke's live band, Atoms for Peace, since 2009.
Godrich has also worked with acts such as Paul McCartney, Travis, Beck, Ultrasound, Jason Falkner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Pavement, Brazzaville, Air, Natalie Imbruglia, The Divine Comedy, The Sundays, U2, and R.E.M. His production technique is notable for its dense layers of sound.
I needed a producer, apparently, so I picked this guy. What do I know? Seems like he's worked on everything that Radiohead has done, and produced most of it (everything except "The Bends" it appears, which he mixed). He's also worked on 4 albums for Beck ("Mutations", "Sea Change", "Guero", and "The Information", producing all but "Guero"), so that alone is good enough for me. Actually it appears as though he's even co-written some songs with Beck and played on his albums too, kool!
He knows his way around a studio, has worked on a lot of good, interesting stuff, so whatever.
