Empire State of Mind is clearly contrived to be a ubiquitous song, but at the same time thousands of artists try to create ubiquitous songs and don't come close to having that success. I think Jay is a good pick, but I think there are other hip-hop artists who can make anyone into a star with their production and I am not sure Jay's force of personality will automatically make him into the global icon he became.
depends man, I mean this is the guy that famously said he dumbed down his lyrics for his audience. Rap is weird in this way. You can be the best MC in the world and never have a platinum album. People really don't want to listen to a guy spit 48 bars w/o hooks or some super introspective **** thats depressing.
I agree that there are better lyricists out there, ****, the guy who I just vaguely mentioned is better imo, but he just doesn't have the same ability to identify what works with the masses, or what will drive trends. He's more content with making albums hip hop heads will like, and while thats cool, he shouldn't go before Jay-z. This said person has also worked with some of the best producers in hip hop too.
