Whitney has a really amazing voice. Her crackheadness as of late hurt her rep so much. Better pick than Beyonce imo, maybe about the same as Mariah and Dion. Good value here imo. I think people really forget how huge she was in the 80's and early 90's.

FWIW there was one person that I think may > Luther but I was unsure of how they would work with the other 4 and I know cohesion isn't #1 I kind of want at least some. I'll comment more when this individual gets selected(hopefully by me in round 6, lol).

Thats who I was talking about. I should have taken her last round and luckboxed into getting her here. I was actually kind of pissed I didn't take her after I thought about it. Still...I love Luther. And I think he pairs with her terrifically.

Going through stuff for the pick it seems every single pop/r&b female vocalist lists Whitney as their idol and the person they looked to when they were coming up.

Yeah, I think people's views vary by age. I remember when she was considered untouchable as a vocalist. So much talent, what a waste.

I actually think her 2009 #1 album shows how much people still really really like her, even after all the **** she's gone through.

Listening to I think 15 youtube videos in the past hour of hers, her live performances are absolutely insane. The Star Spangled Banner, she slaps it in the face. That last youtube video I posted, is basically the epitome of just how amazing her voice is. Its mesmerizing.

I never really appreciated her until a few days ago.

To all the people posting about going through this thread and finding new music, I assume the last ~100 picks will be the best for discovering new artists.

Ha, yeah, good point. It sucked that her world tour was a complete bomb(well I think every date was soldout). Her voice just isn't what it was. Its really sad.

I thought this was interesting, her tour in 1999:

Quote:
The tour was successful. The concerts featured Houston's highest ticket prices. With many shows, Houston commanded up to $150 for a ticket, making her just one of a few artists to break the $100 barrier. Houston, along with rapper Jay-Z, were the only urban acts that were able to translate successful album sales into successful tours.

I think based on pure vocal power/peak, the only ones that are comparable are Aretha and Mariah. Dion's close, but I think she lacks something, for me personally. I guess there is one still left thats close. Gaga is a great singer too, but she can't touch Whitney, Aretha, and Mariah imo.

Round #6 Pick #109

Spoiler:

I'll let cwice do the writeup when he gets online since it was his idea.

Funny, I hopped in my car after posting the Vedder writeup and had my iPod on shuffle. The next song it played was Do the Evolution. His performance is so good on that song, the range from his low melody to that screeching howl... just awesome rock.

Whitney Houston was a great pick, btw. Probably 4th round value at worst, maybe 3rd.

ive got a huge buddy boner. i was wondering when some non-elvis '50s rock guys would go. couldnt tell if it was just taste, or maybe theyre just not seen as potentially successful in the current times (could make a vali argument there).

ha, look at that guy. He looks like a nerd!

TuT and I were discussing him yesterday. Only 2 years worth of work, but some epic songs came from him.

Nice pick, small body of work but the influence was enormous.

We were seriously considering Buddy, but neither SL or I knew enough about him to really defend him/explain the pick and idk how well he would pair with our other guys. I think he could have been someone who would go in round 1 (and probably get loled at), but someone could make a solid enough case to convince me he could go there.

Whitney was someone I had above Beyonce, though it is very close because Beyonce is not a crackhead.

I think Buddy is a great pick here. Someone we've been discussing for awhile. He probably benefits more from the death rule than anyone. Obv. died right away but hugely successful both commercially and critically and had a huge influence on the future of rock.

****, I have four guys in mind, and all four represent entirely different directions, and I could go with any of them.

I'd be willing to trade down if anyone has a guy they really want to move up for.
