Previous thread is here.

Welcome to the official Music Studio / Record Label draft picks and discussion thread. Most of the basics were covered in the interest thread, but I'll post a quick refresher for you here:

-We are drafting musicians with the goal of creating the best music studio possible. This means, essentially, amassing the most creative talent possible. The artists you draft can work together, or separately (and will have full access to studio session musicians for any projects they want to take on). Your goal should not be strictly commercial success, or (to a certain degree) strictly critical success, but to make music that is well-regarded and influential and timeless.

-The draft will last 14 rounds. The final four rounds will be double picks. The draft will start with reverse snake for the first four rounds before going to reverse order regular snake for the remainder. The draft snake will look like this: A - B - B - A - B - A - B - A - B - A - BB - AA - BB - AA.

-You will have 12 hours from the time you are on the clock to make your selection. If someone notices you are online at the forums and it's your turn, you will have one hour from the time you are first seen online to make your selection. In both cases you will be skipped when your time expires.

-All picks must come with a writeup, complete in format with a link to a youtube clip of a song by the artist (or other example of his work) followed up by the artist and writeup in spoiler.

-As commissioner, I reserve the right to force anyone to make a selection if I feel they are intentionally stalling the draft, and to remove / replace any owner I feel is insufficiently participating.

-Trading picks is allowed, but holding up the draft to squeeze out the best possible offer is not. Double picks must be traded in tandem, not broken up.

-Anyone who has made recorded music in some capacity as an artist since 1950 is eligible. Record executives who are strictly businessmen are not eligible.

I take it we can make our pick and provide a detailed description later in the day? I can be spotted on 2p2 at any given hour during the day, but I cannot take the necessary amount of time to write up my pick until the evening.

Picks should come with a writeup, but in the interest of keeping things moving, we can let you post your pick with a brief writeup if you come back to it later.

I was also thinking you can PM either me or the next guy to act your pick, and we'll keep the picks moving behind the scenes, but that sounds needlessly complicated, especially if we get 6 or 7 deep.

might wanna restrict access or something. someone was messing around with the SS in the footy draft, they had to go back and re-create the whole thing again i believe. sounded like a major PITA.

kit was able to re-open it, but we restricted editing access. I'd suggest giving out editing access to a few people and leave it open to view to anyone with the link.

Roughly. I mean, your guy might die at the same time or might not, but for the purposes of this draft you should expect the same production in terms of volume / quality that he/she gave in real life.

I mean, there are cases where you could argue someone had some missing years of production that wouldn't happen again (like being wrongly incarcerated for 20 years or something), but those are exceedingly rare, and like I said, the point of this is to deal with known quantities, not hypotheticals.

Cliffs notes: Yes, basically.

yeah i guess the longevity issue is sorta irrelevant. i mean most of the famous musicians who died prematurely got at least 5-10 years of work in, so if you have that in your studio you're basically good. even in that time most could theoretically make 5-10 albums with the other drafted talent.

as we supposed to consider other aspects of the business, like touring, promotion, etc, or is it basically all about album creation in the studio (and the things that go along with that)?

I think we should treat it like a football draft. If their lifestyle was such that it impacted their productivity (either while productive or due to early death) that should be considered. The death thing is variance to some degree no matter what though. Some people were unlucky to OD and some more are certainly lucky to be alive.

If they were murdered or died in a freak accident or something, I don't think that should be held against them.

I took it as straight out of the studio, otherwise touring makes a huge difference in the value of some artists.

The focus is intended to be on recording artists, so yeah, studio production is what's important. Money you'd make from touring isn't really a consideration here... in fact, I don't really want people thinking about the money too much, more about "Taking the GOAT musicians".

I think that stage presence should play a good portion into the pick you're taking.

Insofar as stage presence makes one a great musician, yeah. I mean, there are a lot of factors, but it's a pretty subjective draft, you know? I just didn't want people arguing ZOMG LOOK AT THESE DOLLARZZZZ

I mean, ability to perform live is important-- part of being a great musician is being a great performer-- but I don't want people trotting out gate receipts as a defense or anything.
