Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

I met Jon Jones last spring in a bar in Montreal for a Hardcore Sports Radio event. Didn't get to talk to him personally but he was a great guy. Started off the night saying he couldn't drink because he was training and was slamming shots back by the end.

No, saying that it was an embrassment is fine. Saying it multiple times while looking like he's going to throw a tantrum is what makes him look bad

"so upset" - really? so upset? wow, did someone die?

I've said though, I normally like Dana because he isn't afraid to speak his mind. this just seemed over the line.

This.

I Bones and he's easily one of my favorite fighters, if not my favorite fighter. However, jumping from Vera to Anderson... doesn't seem like the best of ideas.

Not sure who they should have Anderson fight but there's a ton of directions they could go. I actually think Sonnen for all of his **** talking would get destroyed and quickly... if Anderson felt like doing it and not dancing with him for 5 rounds.

I don't know if you can really get mad at it though unless you think that it's an act.

Yea, I was talking about his Twitter, which is a complete joke and really should show some type of decorum if he's gonna keep an active account. I mean, come on. That's amateur hour.

I'm not mad or angry. It just makes Dana look childish when he says things like not wanting to even see GSP vs Silva.

What does it really matter if he curses out a few idiots on twitter?

You don't see a problem with him saying "I don't give a **** about the fans" on twitter?

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

Dana told Ariel Hawani that he basically ordered Silva into his trailer after the presser and was going to have a private talk and try to really understand what was happening.

There's already a rumor going around that the best way to 'punish' him might be to put him on the Afghanistan card that might not even be shown in the states.

From a practical perspective, you can't put him on the undercard. The best you can possibly hope to get is a good matchup. Forrest was great because Forrest will always push the action and force the action. It's nearly impossible to fight a boring fight with Forrest. But even when maia was swinging his silly-looking punches and was way open, Anderson just refused to hit him.

I say that one of two things should happen.

Chael Sonnen - Chael will talk so much **** about him dancing, Anderson will have to respond. I hope. Chael could maybe shame Anderson into finishing him, if that makes sense.

permanent 205 or HW. At 205, I don't think this is a problem. The fighters there might not be as good as Anderson, but they almost all have huge KO power. Anderson will finish in order to avoid the lucky KO. It's almost like he won't finish when he knows there isn't any danger, but if he thinks there is some danger, he'll take you out quick. His best opponents were all finished, the weak ones go to decision. Forrest, Henderson, Franklin twice, etc.

Does Silva have say in being moved up permanently to 205?

I assume (and would hope) that there's no way Dana can cut into his prize money or anything like that.

I don't know, not really. His actions speak louder than a few tilty, probably drunk tweets. He's shown time and time again that he cares more about the fans than probably any commissioner in sports. Is anyone going to stop following the UFC because of his tweets?

It depends. He doesn't really have much bargaining power besides threatening to quit.

I agree with all of this. Still don't think the twitter stuff is great though.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

The twitter stuff is awful and Dana needs to learn to censor himself sometimes, but overall I think he's a pretty fantastic commissioner. He promotes the hell out of fights and he at least offers the impression that he cares about the fans and their opinions. I don't think anyone was running around pissed, embarrassed, and apologizing after the Roy Jones Jr/Hopkins debacle last week.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

yeah, the fact that he's mortified by this main event is a good thing. It shows that he gives a ****. What other commissioner have you ever seen publicly apologize like that?

the twitter stuff is obviously over the line though.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

That's a really good point Lurchy, and Dana does a great job from the sports side of it. But the fact still remains that the endgoal for the UFC is to break through into the mainstream; Twitter blowups and Dana's "****ing ******" videoblog don't help the cause, because - right or wrong - there's still a lot of people who'd love nothing more than to see him fail and you can't give them any ammo.

Sometimes Dana comes across as too much of a fan and not enough of a statesman. And by fan, I mean your average belligerent, loose-lipped sports bar patron. That's not good. Otherwise, he's doing an excellent job.

They should switch the colours schemes so green is 67%-100% and red is 0-33%

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

I thought points should have been taken from both fighters.

I probably would have taken a point from Maia in the early rounds, or at least warned him. I think Maia would have actually responded if I warned him though, so there wouldn't be a need to take a point in that direction.

I would have taken points from Silva at multiple points in this fight. Moron Miragliotta had already warned him twice when he called time-out for yet another warning. He should have taken a point at that point, and i would have done it much sooner.

Personally, I love them. The UFC is a brand. It's product is entertainment. If it weren't for Dana White's insistence on good fights and incentivizing fighters for having them, the quality of UFC shows would be a lot less imo.

It's not going to break into the mainstream unless they severely change the rules to make it appear less violent. His goal should be to do everything in his power to keep the current dedicated fan base here and expand globally.
