so many washed up bums that two of the fights are potentially for #1 contender positions?

Bowles-Faber winner gets a title shot.

Hendo-Shogun could lead to a title shot for Hendo because Rashad is inevitably going to crack his skull or something and still not be able to fight jones.

jon jones mauls most everyone in the division. Somebody still has to fight him.

Anderson Silva is like a -1000000000 favorite over everyone not named Sonnen, but he still fights them.

I don't know why you think faber is a shell of himself. He's a top 4 BW in the world according to everyone anywhere. He's 2-1 in the BW division, and the one loss is to the dominant champ in a reasonably close fight (clear Cruz win but competitive). That fight was also FOTN and very entertaining.

To top it off, he's still 1-1 against Cruz. Bowles and Faber are both ranked between 2-4 by almost everyone, and both can claim a rematch is legit for different reasons. Bowles lost his title to Cruz but has never lost otherwise, and had a broken hand and broken ribs in that fight. Faber has already beaten Cruz and is 1-1 with him (and their last fight was FOTN and awesome).

Makes sense either way.

think faber has lost a lot of his manic speed like mike tyson u used to notice how overwhelming he was but after buster and now for faber u notice how short he is.

Mir is incredibly underrated imo. His last 8 fights(with my ranking of his opponent in parentheses):

win over Roy Nelson(8)
win over Crocop(unranked)
loss to Carwin(6)
win over Kongo(7)
loss to Brock(3)
win over Big Nog(unranked, but this was in 2008 when Big Nog was much closer to his prime than now. For example, in the fights before and after facing Mir, Big Nog beat Tim Sylvia and Randy Couture)
win over Brock(3)
win over Hardonk(unranked)

So he has lost to my #6 and split with my #3. Otherwise undefeated.

By comparison, lets take a look at the guy ranked right below him in my rankings, Alistair Overeem. Not counting his no contest against CroCop, he has won 10 in a row, but look at his opponents:

Fabricio Werdum
Todd Duffee
Brett Rogers
Kazuyuki Fujita
James Thompson
Tony Sylvester
Gary Goodridge
Mark Hunt
Lee Tae-Hyun
Paul Buentello

I'm definitely excited to see Overeem/Brock, but I'm not sold on Overeem at all yet. His last win over Werdum was incredibly unimpressive imo. I think he gets way overrated due to "OMG, hes so big and scary looking!"

The SF HW division has/had a bunch of cans like Fedor, Brett Rogers, BigFoot, etc. These guys beat up on each other, so people forget that its the minor leagues.

Now I'm not saying that definitively proves that there aren't any elite talents in their division. But, just like in other sports, it can be a bit of a crapshoot as to who will pan out when they finally reach the big leagues and who will bust. For every Peyton Manning, theres a Ryan Leaf.

I may be overrating Kongo, but his only losses in his last 9 fights were to Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir. And I consider his performance against Cain to actually be a positive for him in these rankings. He took him to a decision and he actually knocked him down with punches twice in that fight. Before the JDS/Cain fight, Kongo was the only one to make Cain look human. Just watch the Brock/Cain fight and the Kongo/Cain fight back to back and I think Kongo comes out looking great.

With all that said, I could definitely buy moving Kongo down to #11 on my list. I made my list fairly quickly and didn't think things through a ton.

Barnett hasn't lost since his 2006 loss to prime Nog, and has no great wins but lots of decent wins, more than Nelson.
Maybe I give fighters more credit for competitive losses than you do. Roy Nelson took JDS to a decision, and JDS had plenty of opportunities to finish imo. Since entering the UFC:

KO win over Brendan Schaub(KOTN)
KO win over Stefan Struve(KOTN)
Decision loss to JDS
Decision loss to Mir
KO win over CroCop

I very much disagree that Barnett's resume was more impressive. Here were his opponents in that win streak you speak of:

Hidehiko Yoshida
Jeff Monson
Pedro Rizzo
Gilbert Yvel
Mighty Mo
Geronimo Dos Santos
Brett Rogers
Sergei Kharitonov

Thats interesting. What can a fighter do to work on this then? Obviously you don't want to be taking huge punishment in training.

No idea if it's the best way to do it, but when i boxed many years ago, there was this drill to provoke fighting spirit. (or toughness i guess)

Basically a couple of guys corner the target and focus more on hitting him with a volume of punches. The guy under pressure should try to not just cover up all the time, but cover and counter accordingly.

I'm sure theres a thousand drills like this.
Part of it is probably genetics.

Only chance for Brock to overcome this is to accept it's there, and to push himself and allow his partners to go hard on him in sparring.
It's also something to be said for being technically proficient. I think a part of Brocks flaw is based on just not knowing what to do.

Assani, Nelson took JDS to a decision, but that's only an accomplishment of survival. He got his ass squarely beat the entire time. Same agaisnt Mir. He had basically zero effectiveness against either of them.

And I still do think that Barnett's recent win streak is more impressive than beating Struve and Schaub. Struve is just awful, despite looking cool he folds like tent to anyone with a tiny pinch of power. Monson, Sergei are good wins. yvel was on a 7 fight win streak before losing to barnett. Rizzo is decent.

And none of those are great wins, but simply staying active against top 50ish types (with a few top 25 thrown in) and never losing is pretty good.

Came to post this same thing. That and how amazed I was with the ME. 25 minutes of (legendary) octagon goodness. I might as well admit at how bad I thought Hendo was gonna lose Vs. what I thought was gonna be a focused and unstoppable Shogun. Man was I wrong (and entertained because of it).
