like i always thought the main reason for the ~0.5g/game HFA in the sport was mainly due to how the crowd could influence the officials' decisions, especially the big ones like reds & PKs.
but in MLS it manifests itself how? travel fatigue? like it's just bizarre to watch, for example, VWFC just blitz teams at home, then go on the road and look half speed, and seem unable to string 2 passes together. see this with a lot of teams, most maybe. and in most cases it's not like the crowds are dominating proceedings. so what then?
I know that Jermain Defoe commented on how brutal travel is in North America, so I suppose that is probably the main factor because a lot of the league is comprised of foreign players not used to these long travels across time zones. I guess the other factor is familiarity with any quirks in stadium or pitch, more familiar with the sight lines, etc. Also I think some managers drastically alter tactics on the road, even if it doesn't always make sense. I know that last year with the Impact, Frank Klopas had a very pessimistic outlook on the road and was almost playing to draw instead of being pragmatic.
