Re: MLB Regular Season Thread 2012

I'd also like to state that Matt Wieters will be the UNDISPUTED best catcher in baseball this season.

Stomper is the mascot of the Oakland Athletics. He is an elephant adorned with an A's uniform of the number 00. The use of an elephant to symbolize the Athletics dates from the early years of the franchise, when a group of Philadelphia businessmen, headed by industrialist Benjamin Shibe, became the team's first owners. When asked to comment, John McGraw, manager of the New York Giants of the rival National League said something to the effect that "Shibe had bought himself a white elephant." In response, A's manager (and future owner) Connie Mack selected the elephant as the team symbol and mascot.

Would anyone here take another team against the O's in a "Who's a lock to finish last in their division" bet?

Re: MLB Regular Season Thread 2012

I honestly think the O's are going to go something like 73-89, but dammit I can dream.

Also if the O's start out something like they did last year (6-1, iirc) expect me to be itt singing praises about our inevitable playoff push, no matter how silly it may be.

Rays went worst to first and made the WS a few years back... WHY NOT US? WHY NOT NOWWWWWW

They're obviously awful, but they at least have the Cubs and Pirates to pin some hopes on.

Assuming you dismiss the Yanks, Sox and Rays as teams the O's could finish in front of, that leaves the Jays who A) were 81-81 last year, B) will not get substantial ABs from Corey Patterson, Laynce Nix, Rajai Davis or Aaron Hill, C) will get full seasons from Lawrie, Rasmus, KJohnson, Santos and D) just went 21-4 in spring training (I know, lol@spring training...). If despite all of that (and more), the Jays don't improve, the O's still need to make up 12 games just to tie for last. I mean, I just don't see how any other team is close to being locked in for last in their division.

Re: MLB Regular Season Thread 2012

Everybody knew James Shields would start Opening Day since that annoucement came earlier in camp, but the rest of the order will be as follows: David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore, and Jeff Niemann.

Surprised Moore isn't ahead of Hellickson. Not that it matters much, but just saying.
Oh and my prediction Rays AL East champs.

I'm wondering, with the extra playoff spot will they still do away with the divisions like they were talking about or will it stay this way?

I'd take the Mets but it's kind of a boring bet since they're both going to finish last. Maybe if the team with more wins gets the tiebreak?

when teams have so little hope to get out of the cellar, it becomes a real question whether there's even a significant difference

plus it seems you're underestimating just *how* bad the astros are

Nah, I get that they are beyond atrocious, but few of the rooks could play over their heads and the Cubbies are pretty bad in their own right.
