In a perfect world the Yankees would trade Nick Swisher for Roy Oswalt. Oswalt goes into the staff and Swisher can play 1b for Philly until Howard comes back and then move to the OF after. But the deal will never happen, so why waste time?
Speculating on who's gonna sign where is much more interesting since the good FAs have to play SOMEWHERE.

I don't think Swisher for Oswalt is feasible b/c Oswalt has both a mutual option with Philly and a full no trade clause. Just don't see him exercising his end of the option and then accepting a trade. FWIW, I don't think Philly picks up his option on their end as it is.

I sort of agree because it signals renewed intent from the cubbies, but as for Theo's job performance over the last 3 or 4 years - meh.

Yeah but it's likely that:
Theo > Cherington >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hendry
The marginal downgrade in losing Theo for the Red Sox is meh, but the marginal upgrade for the Cubs is likely pretty huge.

I love them both, but they were paid very good money while they were in Boston and given ample resources to succeed. The smearing that is going on is lame, but maybe its all true? Sounds like the Bos clubhouse was a disaster, and while I dont blame Francona for it, well it was his watch. Goes both ways ya know.

if Torre doesn't write his book. Nobody knows what happened in the NY clubhouse. No organization in baseball has officials who like to "spill the beans".
WHy would I be mad? this is the start of the end for BOS. NY can succeed for decades upon Decades. BOS has been good since like 2000, perhaps its time for them to go back to the mediocrity that Theo and franc got them out of.

Oh please. Losing Theo is the BEST thing for the Sox. Pre-2008 Theo, yeah, losing him wouldn't be great. But after the last 3 years, you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a Sox fan who isn't glad he's gone now. JD Drew, Dice-K, Lackey, Lugo, Renteria, I could name three bad moves he's made for every good one.
And Francona, I don't know why you're acting like he was one of the guys who got the Sox out of their "mediocrity." If anything, his lazy, nice guy, coddling attitude is the reason the Sox have just 2 titles instead of 3 or 4. And all these rumors of clubhouse hijinks or distractions coming out, it was HIS responsibility to make sure that didn't happen, and yet it did. And it was HIS responsibility to make sure we didn't blow one of the biggest September lead of all time, and yet it did. How the hell do you NOT fire him? I pity the next team that gets him.
I'm just curious why you're drawing the idiotic conclusion that losing Theo and Franc = mediocre Sox, when it's pretty much them who kept the Sox mediocre over the last 4 years...

lots wrong this this post.
No BOS has not been mediocre for 4 years. they have been a tough team that are almost WS favs all 4 years with that roster and manager and GM. I wouldn't call them in mediocre land.
those big signings? did you see their numbers the year before? they were really good. you cant LOl at mgmt just because they go out to get a player who can help their club when that player ****s the bed for watever reason.
Francona isnt a great manager but hes better than half of the nameless managers out there who will get canned in under 3 years. them slippingin SEPT yet again, is everyone's fault. they couldn't handle the consistency of NY and TB. NY stepped their game up when they need it the most in the regular season. BOS failed to do that yet again. and also lets not forget about their injuries to that BOS roster the past 3 years.

Any idea when it'll be completely official? Or when we'll hear the names that'll be compensation? As long as it's not Brett Jackson I'll be happy, but I've heard Gammons and Buster both mention him

I hope they don't, because then NY can go after him (even though they probably won't because I haven't heard any rumors about it). But, I don't see why he wouldn't accept a trade to the Yankees if it was actually a possibility. I'm sure he likes it just fine in Philly but going to the Bronx isn't exactly being sent back to AA. It's not as if the money he stands to make will change if the option gets picked up.
