In Hindsight sure, but looking at WS% today, the difference between the impact Davis' acquisition makes vs adding one on the RPs mentioned above can't be that big

We all may have underestimated the market value of top-line closers.

it doesn't even necessarily work in hindsight considering by far the 2 least valuable players in game 7 were miller and chapman

I feel like if everyone argues this for another couple hundred posts, someone will change their mind.

I think the trade is fair. Had my hopes up after some Twitter rumors of more but realistically this seems fine for both sides

sure, but i mean, chapman is going to make more money (and more AAV in some to potentially all) than any of encarnacion (3.9 WAR), desmond (3.3 WAR), turner (5.6 WAR), fowler (4.7 WAR). that's not really defensible and goes to show how warped and inefficient the closer market has become. people seem to have a pretty misguided idea of cause and effect concluding the indians and cubs got to the world series because of miller and chapman respectively to the point that everyone's tripping over their own dicks to be the ones who overpay for one of these guys. i didn't think melancon at 62/4 would actually be a value signing

my overall point is i think the winners in this situation are going to be the ones who fly under the radar with their bullpen construction (trading for non-closers, building from within, that sort of thing) as opposed to the ones who make the splashy moves that are either prohibitively expensive on the open market or hugely detrimental in terms of prospects being traded, and of course the sellers

Bolded seems incredibly shortsighted to me. It's clear that MLB front offices have moved beyond mere value-by-WAR and that elite relievers in particular can't be measured that way.

Question: Now that the Phils and the DBacks have gone analytical and are no longer the lolphils and loldbacks, which front office is the league's biggest lol? Miami because Loria's still making them chase closers? Cinci for the worst firesale of all-time?

Your forgetting about teams who think they are contending, but then come July, aren't. There will always be those teams unloading.

Good question. Beane has had some lol moments the last few years.

Doesn't seem likely.

TenderVigilante has already changed my mind somewhat on the merits of acquiring Davis.

But I'm open to hear more from him and others.

Dbacks are looking to sign Fernando Rodney, so not sure how it still isn't loldbacks

Loldbacks are still loldbacks until proven otherwise. OriLOLes forever. Rockies (ROFLckies?) took a pretty big step in the right direction today. LOLria in Miami? AngeLOLs seems pretty fitting.

If Desmond is really playing first, I don't think the Rox step was in the right direction at all.

It ruins Desmonds value in his versatility

Terrible signing, imo, even if they move 2 of Cargo/Blackmon/Parra and sign a 1st baseman. and they were too stupid to move one of them last year.
