Short and simple: The season is done, the Cubs have won and while that's a great story, there's new business at hand.

It's time for the MLB off-season, that cold, blustery three-month void where the game being played takes place off the field. Theo and Friedman, Billy Boy, Dombrowski, Mo and twenty five other suits are about to play the ultimate chess game, trying to outwit one another while dozens of agents, representing the game pieces, look to manipulate the game to get their (and their clients') own personal piece.

Who will buy? Who will sell? Who will sign where? Which free agents will be left out in the cold? How will the collective bargaining agreement change the rules? All of the answers will come in the next three months as MLB's thirty franchises set themselves up for 2017 and/or for years to come, while weighing and balancing...everything.

I could put a couple more hours into this OP, but that's valuable time I could spend reading MLBTR or pondering the possibilities. Hell, if someone wants to make a better OP, have at it. I just want someone where I know I can go when my RSS feed lights up.

With all of that out of the way, apart from the obvious selections of the big boys there are a few people I am interested in following this offseason:


Sean Rodriguez should be cheap and hits well vs lefties. He's always hit lefties better than righties and last year saw an uptick to OPSing .934 against them. As the "fourth" 2b on the board I think he can be a nice small addition to a team close to contention and being 31 I think it could be the case for a few years still.

Carlos Gomez was pretty good for the rangers down the stretch with an OPS of .905. While that number is inflated due to a sss, he was able to show that he can still be productive despite what his last year in milwaukee and his time in houston would tell you. He seems like a prime 1-2 year deal for cheap flyer.

Reddick was atrocious for the Dodgers (OPS of .643 there), but he's been a productive hitter in Oakland for years. Hell, he was having a career year before the trade there. Will teams be offering to him based on his second half? If so, he could be the best value of the offseason.

Expect the Cubs to be big players for one of the elite closers or other bullpen help, since it's their only real hole to fill. Also maybe this is the year they finally find someone to give up a young pitcher for Soler, who could easily be a quality starter for someone, but is languishing as a 5th outfielder on this team. He's cheap and under control for 4 more years, so seems an obvious candidate for a mutually beneficial trade.

Have to think the Cubs would get less pitching for this version of Soler than they would in any other season. The market's just flooded with OF-types. I do like them to make a big play for Kenley though, esp with the 2017-18 lights-out reliever class relatively weak (KRod's the biggest name there).

Yeah, I'm not expecting the next Syndergaard in return or anything. They did trade AAA fire hydrant Dan Vogelbach for Mike Montgomery at the deadline this year, in a move no one paid much attention to, but Montgomery ended up being a very valuable bullpen piece this postseason and looks like the leading candidate to be their 5th starter next year, with 5 years of control remaining. If Theo could find someone else like that with upside for Soler, I'd be pretty happy at this point. He just has no place to play with some combination of Schwarber, Heyward, Zobrist, and Contreras occupying the corner outfield spots pretty much every day. He barely got playing time even when Schwarber was out for the season.

I think the market for Ryan Howard should be closer to negative $11 million.
