It makes perfect sense, he's in the line of sight of the runner, and if the runner didn't see where the hit went, seeing the fielder in front of him acting like he's camped under a pop up is going to be very misleading.
It's one of those plays that some players might never make, and some players might make 3 or 4 times a game. The fact that he did it so instantly makes me think he does this stuff regularly. Just a heads up little move that will sometimes work, and costs you nothing to try. Shows me how much his head is in the game. The commentators didn't notice, probably almost nobody in the crowd noticed. One of those "little things" that doesn't show up in a statbook. That's why you missed it. Almost everybody probably did.
