i just have this feeling that how players play now are just products of their situations and not some inherent style and that i'd rather err to the side of talent & physical freakiness -- (makes me think of that story of MJ taking it to heart to defend Kukoc)

right, that's the root of the disagreement. Same disagreement I have with VM. Dragic brought his inherent style to SG. But he's a human being and didn't want to be matched up on defense against bigger size the entire game and, going back to my other point, he also wants to be the quarterback. He wants the ball in his hands.
It's a bit of coach worship with the other viewpoint tbh. It's like a general, he can put his soldiers in the best position and use strategy but he can't change who they are.
