Re: Minor League Baseball Discussion

Good post, mb.

This thread inspired me to look up this old guy that was in a nearby high school that was drafted 9th overall by the Royals in 2001. A guy I knew from HS had transferred to his school to play on the better baseball team that was getting way more attention from scouts and ended up being drafted in the 31st round himself.

Anyway, Mr. #9 was out of baseball in 4 years. Blogs and stuff from the time are rife with rumors of steroid use by him in HS, but it is after all random on the internets, so who knows. Do people that can legitimately throw 100 mph generally fall by the wayside that quickly?

not that bad, when you consider that more than a 1/4th of MLB is comprised of foreign players who are not part of the draft.

I haven't been involved in it for a long time but $500k still has to be a lot for 11th round.
Sometimes a guy with top 2 round talent will slip in the draft because he is not expected to sign...already committed to LSU or something.

So why waste a top pick on him. But then an organization sees he is still available and figures that a 20% chance of signing him is better than the other available candidates. He's just too droolworthy. Well, the guy with top 2 round talent is still going to command that kind of signing bonus...and if he doesn't get that he will just go off to college.

Re: Minor League Baseball Discussion

"Making it" though can mean 10 games or something. And many first rounders will get that shot at Sept roster expansion just because they are first rounders.

The key is how many make it for just one full'ish season. And you start losing more of the top 2 rounders if that is the standard.

Re: Minor League Baseball Discussion

Thats true, but i dont think its fair to compare the MLB directly to other sports in terms of the draft. The thing is a large % of the draft picks were/are high schoolers, who will not be ready for years and are only being drafted because of how scouts project their tools to play out, which is pretty risky and speculative. The NFL doesnt have this problem because all of their draftees are essentially vetted through a minor league system in the form of college football. The NBA's track record when it comes to high school draft picks (i duno about the 1 and done era guys really) on the other hand is pretty comprable i think with a fairly low success rate for high draft picks.

I would think that looking only at say college players drafted in the first couple rounds and that make the big league roster for a full season and say NFL players drafted in the first couple rounds who earn a 2nd contract(no high NFL draft pick is getting cut until at least a full season or 2) would be a fairer comparison and something i would be pretty interested in seeing.

Re: Minor League Baseball Discussion

From what I heard he was pretty set on attending LSU, but as a young father he just couldn't pass on the half million. And supposedly the Red Sox agreed to pay his way through the rest of college if things didn't work out. Not much more money involved there, but I imagine it was comforting to him psychologically.

I hope he gets hot and makes a run at it. A few years ago I kept up on Jon Zeringue from LSU for a while since I played HS ball against him. He had ups and downs and never quite got there. He did hit like 23 HRs in AA ball in his last year but I think he got injured and never came back.

Re: Minor League Baseball Discussion

Sadly... as a Canadian can't wait until July 11(i think) for the AAA all-star game in Buffalo, as it is only a hr drive from Toronto.

Also hopefully the jays take buffalo from the mets during the AAA musical chairs this off season.

Jamie Moyer has had 2 very solid starts in AAA. Hope he gets back to the show.

Really?

It's a funnish thing for the players to get to be a part of it and on national TV. And I guess it's kind of neat for a fan to go to as well. But I always hated all-star games.

Went to the AAA All-Star Game in Memphis in 2004 or whenever they had it because I happened to be living there then. Was less than thrilling.

I mean, we saw a bunch of different pitchers (one inning from each like a typical all-star game) and a few HR's (it was like 11-8 or something). But it's hard to get into the Pacific Coast League vs. the International League....or the AL affiliates vs. the NL affiliates or however they do it now.

But that's all also related to my own personal taste for All-Star Games in general which tend to just bore me to tears regardless of the sport.
