hitters hit leadoff because they are good at stealing bases. hitting someone leadoff does not make him a better base stealer, that is a logical fallacy.

hitting 3rd does not mean you wont steal anymore, the 3 hitters just tend to be mashers who arent good at stealing bases. if youre fast, you will still steal bases, ie matt kemp.

harper has a -0.9 ARM

so hes actually cost a run with his arm so far.

maybe just lolsamplesize, but trout is still clearly the more valuable defender 11.6 vs -1.5 uzr.

u srs bro? guys who hit outside of the top 2 end up on base with no room to run quite a bit more often than 1 and 2.

Re: Mike Trout Discussion - best player under 25 in mlb

i think that is true per se, but the actual effects are probably pretty negligible.

like fat david ortiz clogging the basepaths.

Quote:
Seeking greater accuracy, we solicited the help of the Elias Sports Bureau, looking to examine a cross section of players who qualified as "speedy" types and spent significant time in more than one spot in the lineup in the past two seasons. The criteria we used: a minimum of 20 stolen-base attempts in the given season and a minimum of 100 plate appearances in at least two different lineup spots.

During a two-year span (2007-08), only six players fit the criteria with the first and third lineup spots as the ones with 100-plus plate appearances. Four of the six actually attempted to steal bases more often as No. 3 hitters than at leadoff, and the six as a whole averaged one steal attempt per 16.4 plate appearances out of the No. 3 hole, compared to 16.7 at leadoff.

That's because he's making bad decisions. The ARM rating, as constructed, is more of a measure of an OF's ability to hold runners/throw them out. When he airmails it home on a hopeless attempt to throw a runner out, runners advance and his ARM rating suffers.

yes i'm aware harper has monster arm strength which is why i said maybe its just lolsamplesize.

but its really not arguable that trout is a better defender overall imo.

How was Harper's defense valued when he was a catcher? Seems like he would have had a cannon to 2nd base

Pedro, although if you think his K/BB numbers are impressive look at Koufax's SHO compared to Pedro's. Context matters. That said, Pedro plowed through the steroid era like it was dead ball. Pedro didn't have any WS heroics like Koufax, but then again he never really had a chance during his heyday.

Trout is the next Mantle, Harper the next Bonds.

And both going to be Yankees
