I agree. Just sucks that it even came to the point where Brees had to be franchised. When it rains...

Does anybody remember the incident in 1989 when Buddy Ryan put out bounties on kicker Luis Zendejas and quarterback Troy Aikman of the Dallas Cowboys? It was a pretty big story at the time. On the opening kickoff, Zendejas (who at 5'6", 160 lbs is probably smaller than most of you) got rocked, had difficulty getting up, and staggered to the wrong sideline.

Wikipedia article about subject.

Video of Jimmy Johnson talking about the incident with clip of Zendejas getting up at about 0:25.

I'm sure this stuff has gone on forever and will continue to go on as long as football is being played in a form at all recognizable to what we know. I'm not saying I approve of this or that it should be allowed.

Reading about it now, the bounty was only $200. I guess times change in one way.

From a win at all costs perspective, taking out the kicker and punter ASAP is probably a good move, since they are put in a defenseless position, will be hard to replace immediately, and have such a big impact on the game as individuals.

So... why should we trust the coaches at lower levels of football to protect our children? Even if it were possible?

The NFL Network is showing the 2009 Saints Superbowl Run now. Gonna watch with angry eyes.

Wait seems like they have the Saints description up for the show, but are actually showing one of the Steelers Superbowl runs. I wonder if getting replaced in this episode is part of their punishment

LOL Saints. No longer going to be the NFL's teacher's pet. But that was a pretty good run post-Katrina.

All Goodell talks about is cleaning up the game. His hands are tied if he wants to maintain any semblance of dignity/backbone.

Drew Brees set a bulk yardage record last year though so there is plenty for Saints fans to hang their hat on for a while.

shocking that the two most moronic tweets came from a steeler and shawn merriman.

Whoever is snitching on the Saints D should be ashamed of themselves. No one was talking about the "bounty" when they got paid. #shame!

Favre wouldn't do it, but the NFL's findings are grounds for a lawsuit by a QB who was targeted. It's that simple. Suit vs. team and league.

Judd Zulgad ‏ @1500
What is to stop any targeted QB from suing the team, league and Gregg Williams? U can't target human beings.
Obviously the only fair thing to do is to force the Saints to pay Favre and Warner an equivalent salary to what they were making for the seasons they cost them.

Figure that's 2 years of an $11.5m cap hit (Warner) and 1 year of $12m (Favre)

I would guess Harrison has a bigger bounty on him than just about anyone in the league. I would guess he thinks that's part of the game and doesn't sweat it, he knows who has it in for him and they better watch themselves out there cause he is far from defenseless.

Doesn't anyone remember this?

hint even if he had been at the snap, linemen don't fire off the ball like that on kicking plays

It looks like you can just map it against position... kickers and punters against LDO, everyone else "no big deal"

lol at thinking he was trying to injure him there. you dont hit a guy square on the shoulder pads if you want to do harm. you dive at a knee.

I get what people are saying about how football is a violent game and people get injured with or without bounties. But if you take someone like James Harrison for example, He plays the game hard and some people call him a dirty player but if you are going to claim he goes out with the intent to injure or knock out players its all really speculation.

The thing with the bounty program is that now even hits by saints players that were clean and had nothing to do with trying to earn a bounty are looked upon as them intentionally trying to injure. There is no longer any speculation of their intent as the bounty program basically implies he was out to intentionally cause harm.

Obviously this wasnt the case for every tackle but people arent gonna look at it objectively. They are just gonna say Saints are bad and gotta get punished.

the goal is to hit someone as hard as possible but to hope that they are not injured.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if there was a bounty on harrison, but...

I don't see even a hint of an attempt to injure harrison on this play. Like victor said, attempted injuries are hits below the knee. This isn't even close, and when he hits the ground he's given up

Seems far more likely Chester was trigger happy on facing harrison and wanted to give him the best hit possible
