I was just in the lockout thread and was reminded that Geddy is a Flames fan and I Got to wondering how people adopt a team.

For me
Leafs and Jays: home team, can't remember not following them.

Raptors: Mostly proximity, but I think I still prefer the Bulls.

Bulls: saw a dunk contest with MJ in 86 or 87 and I was all in.

Wolverines football: Desmond Howard doing the Heisman caught my eye, and I just kept watching them until I found myself cheering for them. Plus, Fab Five for hoops.

Packers: Don Majkowski beat the Bears on a 4th down play. I just found myself rooting for them to win. Favre come back vs Bengals cemented it.

I'm from vancouver, so for NHL it's the Canucks obv.

For MLB it's the Blue Jays because they are the Canadian team, they get played on TV a ton, and when I was young they won 2 WS which definitely cemented that. From the NL I liked the Giants, from the 89 WS with Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and Matt Williams, and then cemented by Barry Bonds. I also like rooting against the Yankees, so whoever was playing them in the play-offs would be my team for the moment.

For NBA it was the Bulls in the 90's because of Jordan, then the Suns in recent years because of Steve Nash. Don't really have a team now. In the Shaq/Kobe era I would always root against the Lakers, and in the James/Wade era I've been rooting against the Heat.

Mets, went to my 1st Mets game ever
Was in 2000 ,my friend had lawyer dad that got us real good seats. Friend was a Yankees fan and I think it was my first ever bet on a sporting event. Bet 20$ with him which was like a weeks mcd's at the time
Mets were down 9-1 or something in the eight inning.
My friend was like lets gtfo and there's no way they win and stadium was empty.
Somehow Mets get bases loaded in bottom of eighth, score like 10 runs
Was the best baseball experience ever
Got totally hooked and bought a fake Mike piazza Jersey the next day with his 20$ lol

Edit: forgot to mention, I grew up in the middle east and came to ny in 98 .didn't know any other sport but soccer.
Too bad Mets suck now

Redsox:
I grew up in a town equidistant between Boston and New York. When I was in like first grade, 2 of my friends were Yankees fans and 1 was a Redsox fan. The Yankees fans would always win the arguments so I decided to join forces with the Redsox fan so it would be more of a fair fight.

Patriots: followed from being a Redsox fan.

UConn Huskies: home town team.

Never really got into the NBA. I find myself lightly rooting for the Celtics in the playoffs, but it feels too bandwagon-y since getting KG.

Lol hockey. I root for whomever I bet on.

UofL - I was 8yrs old and just getting into basketball when they won the National Championship(basketball) in 1980. Everyone else in my family are UK fans so I started liking the Cardinals. Been a HUGE basketball and football fan ever since.

KC Chiefs - I was a Skins fan when I was a little kid mainly b/c my dad was a fan and b/c of John Riggins. When he retired in 1985 I was starting to think for myself and started looking for a new team. In 1987 they drafted Christian Okoye and I instantly became a fan. 2 years later they drafted 1 of(if not the best) LB's to ever play the game. Derrick Thomas. That sealed the deal and I've been a fan ever since.

MLB - I used to be a fan of the Reds b/c they're close to where I live and we had their minor league team here for many years. I lost about 99% of my interest in baseball after their last strike. I'm not really a fan of any specific team now. I like some players on different teams.

NBA - Never really had a favorite team. I used to like the Bulls and Hawks back when Jordan and 'Nique played. Like MLB I mainly like players instead of a specific team.

NHL - **** hockey.

MLB: lol baseball

Football: Palmeiras (BRA)

My dad took me to my first game when i was 7. I was amazed by the crowd and supporters. Never looked back. This year we won the national cup and were relegated in the league! we will play the libertadores (equivalent to UCL) in second division! lol

apart from Palmeiras i like Liverpool a lot. Probably because of that epic match in Istambul, i was watching it live here in brazil and i was completely speachless after the match. But then i started following the PL and today i pretty much watch any game English Football

NFL- Carolina Panthers. They are the home team. We didn't get a team until I was 12 and before then I never really had a favorite team.

NCAA- Wake Forest. I grew up in Winston-Salem and went to several football, basketball and baseball games as a kid. Most other kids were either for Duke or UNC in my area so I wanted to be a little different.

MLB- Atlanta Braves. Not really home team but most of the Southeast are Braves fans and since most of the games were shown on TBS I was able to follow the team pretty easily.

NHL- Carolina Hurricanes. I wasn't a big NHL fan until a team moved to North Carolina but I always loved hockey. My uncle had season tickets for the minor league team so I went quite often.

NBA- San Antonio Spurs. I never really was a big NBA fan growing up but followed Tim Duncan since he was a big star at Wake Forest.

MLB: Mets - My first baseball game was the major league debut of the highly touted Jeromy Burnitz. I was sitting front row down the right field line and a foul ball was hit down the line. Bobby Bonilla grabbed the ball and lightly tossed it to me. Pretty big deal when you're 8 years old.

NFL: Giants - Super Bowl XXV is the first football game I remember watching. Since then, I was always a Giants fan. Had to fight through the days of Dave Brown, Kent Graham, and Danny Kanell to get to Eli Manning.

NHL: Rangers - I remember being on a bus back from a field trip to Philly while me and my classmates were chanting "Let's Go Rangers!" It was a special occasion because it was 1994 and the Rangers had a shot at winning the Cup for the first time since 1940. I was watching the Bure/Richter penalty shot with my older cousins and I remember us going nuts when Richter made the save because we were all sure that Bure would get the goal.

All my boring Missouri cousins and uncles liked the squaresville Chiefs. Raiders were their arch-enemies, and Daryle Lamonica the Mad Bomber was their QB. Evil Genius Al Davis ran them. They wore cool black and silver uniforms. Easy choice

Born in Columbia and went to all the mizzou games and have never lived outside missouri so mizzou cfb, cbb was an easy choice

lived in kc for the vast majority of my life so pretty std chiefs/royals/sporting KC fan

For NBA i'm a Rockets fan. It stems from my first amazing pair of shoes that came out in like 4th grade, the T-MAC 2s. I was a huge t-mac fan from that point forward and followed him to Houston from Orlando and then just stuck with them once T-mac turned 50. Pretty standard for him to never get out of the first round of the playoffs since that's how the royals/chiefs have been doin since 1994, good job, good effort guys

also a pretty decent manchester city fan, **** off haters. I have no real reason to have chosen them except I bought fifa '10 and had to choose a team to rep and it's not really fun to choose anyone but one of the top 6 teams or w/e. Chose MC cuz they seemed like the little brother of the yankees club, Man U, and Tevez and Toure were beasts, plus sweet powder blue uniforms that go with the royals/sporting KC ideals. They are the only team I have ever liked that has won anything at all

NHL/Golf sucks and in tennis I liked Guillermo Canas cuz **** you that's why

Pro sports: All Detroit teams. Grew up in Michigan, you pretty much have to root for Wings/Tigers/Lions. Never been a fan of the NBA but I'll root for the Pistons in the playoffs.

College: Grew up a child of two Sparty alums, so grew up a Spartan fan. Got accepted into U of M when I was 17, and made the full switch to Blue the day my letter came in the mail.

Blue Jays, Maple Leafs (later Senators), Syracuse - proximity (grew up in Kingston, Ont., later moved to Ottawa)

Lakers - I started following basketball in 1986 and Magic Johnson was my favorite player from the start

Broncos - can't really remember, but I've been a fan since I was about 8 years old

this is me exactly except I have the added reason of one parent going to UGA. I am a ND fan due to my other parent and that whole side of the family and growing up following them incredibly closely. I also care about Duke football, lacrosse, and soccer due to going there, but hated Duke basketball until I sent in my acceptance letter.
