As the only SE member of the team that mortgaged its immediate future to draft an uncertain quarterback at #1, I figured it was my duty to kick this off.

How we got here.

How it's going.

At this point, it seems certain that we will either select a more intelligent and polished but slower and less athletic version of Kyler Murray or Taysom Hill.

I'm still secretly hoping Houston doubles down on getting ****ed by Lovie Smith and gives us enough to move back one.

However, the word on the street is that we have our guy. At least that's what Frank says.

10 other burning questions and comments of the first round.

1. Will Houston actually take a QB at #2 or will they let the #2 QB of the draft fall to the Colts? If so, will that QB go on to have a career of owning Houston for the next 15 years?

2. Do Seattle and the Lions stick with their average vets or do they draft a QB of the future?

3. Will Mark Davis trade the #7 pick for better hair?

4. How much more will Philadelphia improve?

5. Will GB finally take a receiver in the first round now that they have a QB who needs top 100 pass catchers?

6. How far and high will Belichick reach at 14?

7. Who will #1 Chargers take to actually push towards being #1?

8. Will the Ravens draft another failed first round receiver or is woman abuser OBJ enough for Lamar?

9. Will the Jets draft another top 100 pass catcher? Will it even matter?

10. LolDolphins.

Nice OP!

Sorry I couldn’t get around to starting it this year, but it’s fitting that you stepped up.

I need to keep my streak alive of only giving out winners, especially at WR (look it up, I gave out Justin Jefferson and Chris Olave).

This year my favorite WR is Jalin Hyatt. I’m not saying he’ll be the best WR in this class (though he might be), but I am saying he’s gonna be a hit. Most pundits have him as WR4 - WR8 or so…. Fringe-first round or a day 2 pick.

All he did at Tennessee was run go routes outside the numbers and win jump balls. Over and over and over again. He’s got the speed to get open deep, and the ball skills to come down with contested catches.

A lot of pundits have Jaxon Smith-Njigba from Ohio State as the first WR off the board. I think he’s overrated, and the hype has gone out of control. I don’t mean to downplay his productivity in college, which was significant. I’m just pointing out he’s strictly a slot WR at this point, and needs to go to the perfect situation to flourish at the next level.

A team like the Giants, who desperately need WR help, would be quite stupid to take JSN. They already have 3 or 4 smaller, shiftier slot guys, and they badly need someone who can win on the outside.

JSN seems universally mocked to Houston at 12. Will complete my mock tomorrow and post when done

And I have no idea who the Falcons will (or should) get at number 8. The defense is a catastrophe, again, so it needs to be fixed. We’ve already brought in a bunch of free agents and trades on D, so it’ll look very different next year no matter what. I’m fine with “best available defensive player,” whomever that may be. I think the corner out of Illinois Devon Witherspoon is the best corner in this draft, and it’s a good year for CB. Since the Falcons have Terrell and brought in Okudah as a reclamation project, I think front 7 is more likely.

I heard a mock on a podcast with us going with the OT from Northwestern Skoronski. The justification was that Arthur Smith wants to have a power running game with athletic linemen that can pull and get to the next level…. I admit it’s intriguing. We did lose the RT McGary in free agency.

Still…. I think you gotta at least get the defense back to “mediocre” to have any hope of success with a young group of skill position players

Appreciate it! Jeff will certainly help pass the time as a 24 hour pre-show to the main event. Haha.

Appreciate it! Figured I'd enjoy having the #1 pick this year.

I think the problem with Hyatt is that, like you said, all he did was run go routes. His game is one-dimensional. Having a field stretcher is great, especially with how fast today's game is played, but ceiling is someone like Tedd Ginn Jr. Hyatt was also not impactful at all his first two seasons in Tenn. I'm pretty low on Hyatt.

I love JSN. I think he's going to be a rockstar and he can do more than just play the slot, imo. He outperformed both Wilson and Olave when they were all on the same field.

I'm really not sure what to think of Quentin Johnston, but his style of play seems better for what the Giants need. He just seems really raw.

I still don't understand why the current betting odds favor the Falcons taking Bijan. Taking a RB in the top 10 is already bad enough value, but especially bad for a team not even close to competing for a SB.

https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navig...?tab=nfl-draft

Philly is going to have a really tough decision if Bijan is there, because a player like Bijan can really fit and elevate that offense even further, but does Howie really want to take a RB at 10?

Draft stage looks pretty cool, way bigger than the one for the Royals/Chiefs parades.

I'll be in that area anyway Saturday morning and might stick around for round 4 that's supposed to start at 11CT.

(Not that I even know that many players going in round 4).

Good thing for the NFL that KC picks last on day 1 and pretty late on day 2, that's going to make people hang around til the end. Also would be hilarious to see fans react to "the Kansas City Chiefs have elected to trade the 31st pick in the 2023 draft to the.."

Nice OP!

I must say I read less and less of the draft profiles etc each year but it does seem that this year’s 1st Rd QB prospects all seem to be less good than most years and that positional value is the thing driving them up rather than their overall ability

We’ll see.

Fun fact. Only 3 #1 QBs in the past 30 years have won a Super Bowl and only 2 of them….the Mannings…won them with the team that drafted them

The overall SB wins by #1 picks is pretty good though. By my count it’s 16 in the SB era

According to evaluators the whole class is pretty weak at the top. Todays piece and ESPN said that most teams have 1st round grades on only 14-16 players, some even less.

QB specific the class looks certainly stronger than last year. And we'll soon find out about 2021. Outside of the best graded QB prospect since Andrew Luck, pick #2 looks like a total bust, we haven't seen much of pick #3 yet and #11 at least had a promising second season.

Not sure what to make of the chatter about CJ Stroud = stupid. The "I know I'm one of the smartest QBs in the NFL" stuff probably doesn't help.

wait...they've graded Young higher than Burrow and Lawrence? I haven't seen/heard that anywhere?

Contrast CJ’s public comments with this. And yes, Scott knows he accidentally had a typo haha.

which position do we think the Chiefs will be looking to address in the first round: referee or OL?

I think he means don't name the guy who was just drafted in case there are people who can't view the draft til later?

(which seems kind of counter having a live draft thread? but IDK)

I think he meant pulling spoilers from somewhere like Twitter before it’s officially announced on TV as part of the draft coverage.

a 1, 2x2s and a very good 26yo WR on a reasonable 2nd contract really is an excellent result for the Bears to drop 8 spots in a draft where 4 of the picks ahead of them will likely be QBs

They did well. I think the deal makes sense for both franchises, especially since the only true upside piece we gave up was the 24 1st. It could be top 5-10.

as ever, some awesome names in this year's draft.

Never fight a big man with a girl's name. (trust me on this one)

Jacquelin Roy
Kendre miller
Aubrey Miller

The best of the Alliteration

Adetomiwa Adebawore
Olusegun Oluwatimi
Tuli Tuipolouto
Hendon Hooker

Momma's on the weed

Kyu Blu Kelly
Jartavius Martin
De'Marvion Overshown
JoVaughn Gwyn
Jakorian Bennett
sirvocea dennis
Dontayvion Wicks

NFL players since birth

Juice Scruggs
Kelee Ringo

Tank Bigsby

Hard to pick a #1. I really like Juice Scruggs and Tank Bigsby but De'Marvion Overshown probably wins by a nose
