probably has more to do with them not being successful. people don't show up to watch bad hockey teams in general, sometimes even in Canada if the losing goes on long enough.

i mean, since 2002 the Coyotes have had one little 3-year era where they didn't suck, why would anyone want to drive an hour out of town for that? the Panthers are in a similar situation. same thing with the Hurricanes, when they're good people will show up, but too often they ain't. the Thrashers never didn't suck, so nobody cared in the great sports town of Atlanta. the California markets, Dallas, and Tampa have all been solid.

Vegas should be fine, especially if the team gets competitive within 3-5 years, and i don't see why that can't happen.

I don't follow NHL too closely. Is the problem more that the management for these teams is completely inept or that players just don't want to play in cities where noone really plays/cares about hockey?

people make too big a deal about attendance in general.



there are a couple of problematic situations sure (Carolina might be sold and moved, Arizona is working on a new building or moving, ditto for the NYI), but other than that it's ok. the other somewhat struggling teams are mostly smaller markets with bad/boring teams in weird suburban stadiums. Colorado is low now because they're historically awful, when they were good they sold out like 600 games in a row or whatever. but if 22/30 teams are at 93+% it's not even really worth talking about.

guessing Vegas will be another 93+% team.

the bigger problem is that they don't have eleventy billion dollar tv deals like the NFL/NBA/MLB to render this basically meaningless.

as players seem to like playing in warm weather cities with less media/fan scrutiny (and sometimes no state income tax!), i guess it must be a poor management thing where problems exist.

not great, but they aren't finished.

Neal, Marchessault, Smith & Perron are legit offensive players. the defense might not be so great. goaltending should be average. there are a few promising younger players in there like Haula, Lindberg & Karlsson, and Tuch & Theodore are good prospects. also that list doesn't include Vadim Shipachyov, the Russian forward they signed. they're also rumoured to be signing his teammate Evgeny Dadonov, gambling on these guys replicating the recent success of Chicago's Artemi Panarin & Montreal's Alex Radulov.

oh, and all those draft picks. they currently have 12 for this Friday, including three in the 1st round (#6, #13 & #15), and two in the 2nd (#34 & #45). and they'll probably make more trades between now and then. and probably sign more free agents in 10 days.

terrible. trades with other teams will be announced in 5 minutes likely.

vegas should finish last this year, but they have so many draft picks this year and in upcoming years they could be a force in 5 years or so.

I’ve been super wrong about attendance and fan support so far, which is great. Hopefully it is sustainable during inevitable down years but this has been better than best case scenario so far.
