Offensive player is in the paint near the basket. He picks one foot up and hops on just one foot for the rest of the play. He hops outside the 3 point line, catches the ball, shoots it and makes it.
Completely different, because if he's maintaining a dribble then he's constantly re-establishing his area of possession.

In this video Aejones has given up his dribble, keeping the left foot as his pivot. Until that right foot comes back down its established as where it previously was, inside the arc

Wondering how you're gonna settle the bet now that it looks like the majority of SE voted 1/2, but the people who actually know the rules all say 2/3?

I meant if the guy didn't have the ball until he had hopped outside the 3 point line and someone passed it to him

The bet between me and Aaron is this poll, and the actual answer is completely irrelevant to our bet. Jason and Aaron were talking about doing something else such as asking a group of actual refs, but they haven't finalized anything yet that I've heard of.

The thing is I bet the refs who say the rule says it's a 3 pointer would call that a 2 point basket in real game action. Someone show Dirk this thread for next season please!

From a thread linked to from Jake's thread:

Quote:
If the foot in 2-point land comes up so slightly before the foot in 3-point land that it requires a frame-by-frame analysis to determine, the correct call is a 3 (by rule), but we do not fault those who rule a 2 (limitations of human observational abilities).

Still completely different, as he never established possession of the ball inside the 3-point line.

grunching...

shot motion starts with both feet on the ground. id have to say 1pt pickup/2pt league game.

he should lose just for settling for a shot like that.

It stems from the fact that there used to be no 3 point line in the NBA, so people who grew up playing pickup basketball in those days didn't even consider having some baskets be worth more than 1.

Re: Help settle a bet (basketball related)

i guess since im the one shooting i never even think it could possibly be worth one because when i shoot it, i know it's off one foot whenever i come anywhere near releasing it-- i could shoot it off just my left foot, but when i do it fast i tend to have the right foot on the ground pretty close before release.

edit: so, for instance, if i just raised my knee like dirk, it'd then be a 3?

Re: Help settle a bet (basketball related)

The all 1s is a regional thing. I never played a pickup game with 1s and 2s until I left the state of Illinois.
