Re: Help a fellow 2p2er become Canada's next sports broadcaster

A push into 6th is under way. I predict it will happen tomorrow.

Yea, seems to have increased by 6 votes from the time I loaded the page to the time my vote registered. Still in 7th as of a few mins ago, but definitely gaining ground. Just like to point out, I have voted every day and will continue to do so, but I expect the terms and conditions I set out in post #3 to be upheld in the case Andrew takes this.

Voted again. Wish I had remembered that I could do it everyday. Hope you don't lose by 3 votes as a result!

Why was this question asked then?

Why does my ScoreMobile iPhone app cover college sports (great app by the way)?

Is the NBA fair game, and if so, would it be weird to expect somebody who is trying to show he/she is knowledgeable about sports to have heard the term "Fab Five" come up when discussing three very prominent players over the last 20 years?

Obviously college sports is less relevant to people outside the USA than in it. But I thought the point of these competitions was to show that you are more into sports than the average person...

So your position is that the woman who is from Canada and is trying to be on a Canadian sports show but does not know what a Gordie Howe hat trick is or even who Gordie Howe is knows more about college basketball than many American sportscasters know about hockey.

(Statement about not knowing who Gordie Howe is starts at about 3:45 into the video. Not "the name is familiar but I can't quite place it", not "ooooh I've heard of him", complete non-recognition. This is further proven when she tries to talk her way through the question by saying a hat trick is "when you score three goals in soccer". Which it obviously is, but it might not be the best place to start when trying to reason out what a Gordie Howe hat trick is.)

I'm not really old and don't live in the US or Canda. Most people that are interested in basketball at all should probably be able to name at least Rose+Webber

Obviously I'd expect a sports caster to know this it's not arcane stuff or anything.

The problem is that that chick obviously lacks any interest in sports (which Canadian doesn't know Gordie Howe) and just wants to do TV.

as evidenced by the fact that of all sports teams an aspiring canadian sports broadcaster could blog about, she chose AC Milan

lol, yeah figured that might happen when i voted yesterday and he was within 50 or something of 5th. how many votes has he got since this thread started? guess he was in 10th four days ago. almost in 4th, could probably finish 3rd easily.

hope he can keep up his 0.02 posts/day average when he makes the show. maybe we should try to negotiate some kind of "lol donkaments" type SE shout out or something for if/when he gets on TV.

The votes are hugely appreciated.

The post rate will go up. The 2+2 community has been a huge help to my poker game (results be damned!) so you will hear more from me going forward.

Thanks again for all the votes and lets keep this train rolling

I agree that you need to have a genuine interest in sports, especially North American sports, when you apply for a Canadian sportscasting gig. At the same time if you are a sports encyclopedia but suck on camera, you shouldn't get picked. (But if you are great on camera and have a nominal sports knowledge you might have a chance.)

College sports are not followed closely at all in Canada. Americans have the best athletes so Canadian college sports is not that great to watch, therefore most Canadians pay no attention to the NCAA or CIS (the Canadian NCAA equivalent).

The Fab 5 however are reasonably well known so in my opinion that should have been a gimme for everyone.

Thanks again for the votes.
