Pretty sure it won't be in Canada.

It's taking over for the Speed channel, which will stay in Canada and basically just show the FS1/FS2 racing stuff that they're allowed to show.

First day programming in Canada...

Saturday 8/17
8:00am – NASCAR Live: Michigan (FS1)
8:30am – Sprint Cup Practice: Michigan (FS1)
9:30am – Truck Series Qualifying: Michigan (FS1)
11:00am – Sprint Cup Practice: Michigan (FS1)
12:00pm – Truck Series Setup: Michigan (FS1)
12:30pm – Truck Series Racing: Michigan (FS1)
3:00pm – Continental Tire Series: Road America – debut (FS2)
5:00pm – Motorcycle Racing: Miller Motorsports Park (FS2)
9:00pm – MotoGP Qualifying: Indianapolis (presumably FS2)

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that the things that I hate about ESPN (uniformed opinions, pointless yelling, a complete failure to comprehend math, an obsession with non-sports stories involving athletes) are the things FOX most wants to copy. If "embrace debate" weren't already taken, I would expect it be the motto of a show on FS1.

So far FS1 has a show centered around Regis and can't make a deal with DirecTV, Dish, or Time Warner.

Not a bang up start a week before opening.

Also just saw a brief clip of a commercial where Tiki Barber was quoted as saying he hoped to be one of their big personalities. I don't think that have people have given enough thought itt to the fact that it may be worse than ESPN when it comes to pompous talking heads

People have too high of an expectations for Fox Sports 1. It's going to take time to get major sports events. E.g., you know what NBC Sports Network was showing earlier today? Polo (the one on horses, not in water).

It's interesting that they seem to be targeting specific, niche demographics. Showing UFC, soccer and NASCAR is going to guarantee at least a certain set of ratings as far as their live events are concerned. As broad, nationally-based programming continues to die a death these audiences will move the needle more. Their loyalty will be valuable to advertisers. In that way I like what they're doing and think it makes some sense.

On the other hand, foxnews has done the same thing with the tapioca demo, succeeded with ratings, and I don't care for it one bit. So wait and see I guess. I'm hopeful but not expectant.

I think it's why ESPN has moved to the sports narratives model - a sports highlight show just isn't that compelling in the mid 2010s.

As a sidenote, I've always found the Fox Sports graphics ugly, hopefully they'll update those some. And hopefully bring in the Schwab to do a trivia show, those were great.
I think the appeal originally was that it was sports, but it wasnt just boring sports reporting, it was funny, it was cool, it was entertaining.

Problem is that as others started to copy this they've pushed more and more towards the extreme entertainment end of the spectrum, and away from sports. ALL sports coverage now (except ESPN) is like ESPN used to be 20 years ago, its tight, its snappy, its comprehensive.

Where ESPN went wrong was they became infatuated with themselves. Like people at home give a crap what their opinions are. It's like Chris Berman doing everything he can to make the NFL highlights about him and his stupid nicknames and catchphrases.

I don't care if FS1 sucks as long as their clowns don't take themselves seriously or have a ridiculously inflated sense of worth.

Hopes are high but I'll be for real, I don't give 8 ****s how hot Thompson and Andrews are, do not put them on my tv together to talk anything remotely in the realm of sports unless they are bikini'd up, high heel strapped and loaded with 2 cans of whipped cream.

oh man, donovan mcnabb was warm dog **** on the nfln. good luck bringing that "personality."

and i cant take gary payton seriously if fox doesnt make him button up his shirt, put on a tie and shave that ragged goatee. loved gp the player, but hated him on nba tv the few times he was on. he struggles to put paragraphs together. how hard can it be?

that video pretty much popped my balloon.

A la carte pricing can't come soon enough. So silly this stuff has to wait for negotiations with cable companies.

Really? This channel wouldn't exist if not for bundling. And sports fans would be held hostage by a la carte pricing. Sports fans get the best end of the deal cable-wise and it isn't close.

You guys should do a build a Sports Network DRAFT. Could probably only have 3 or 4 teams since the talent pool is really shallow (except sideline reporter). Fill pregame host, top play by play guy, maybe pick a color guy for a few different spots, sideline reporter, etc.

One thing I never understood about ESPN is why they paid their on air talent so much. Berman has to make at least mid-high 6 figures. They could hire any jackass to do the same work for $100k easy. There can't actually be people who would refuse to turn into NFL Highlights shows or US Open if Berman wasn't there, or Stu Scott was on the unemployment line.

We already had an announcer draft that was pretty much exactly that.

yeah I sometimes complain about our $150 cable/internet bill until I remember that I'd pay $200/mo for NFL alone...
