Apparently we're signing Lindelof from Benfica in Jan as well Semedo who is supposedly getting signed and playing the rest of the season at Benfica then join in the summer. Any Benfica fans have an opinion on these two? I trust Mourinho when it comes to signing defenders.

Lindelof seemed pretty mediocre when I've seen him but that was limited to the Euros so small sample size tbf. Weren't 'Boro supposed to sign him in the summer? Basically sounds like the fee they are talking is probably about 4x+ of what he might be worth. He seems to have a good agent. I am pretty skeptical. The amounts being bandied about are just insane. He's only just got onto their first team. He didn't even make the Olympics for some reason. Does anyone have enough to go on to make him have anywhere near that value? Is Smalling worth £50m?

We have plenty of centre backs once Bailly is done at the ACON. I'd rather we were looking at a full back tbh. Atm Smalling is looking likely to be our 4th choice CB. That's decent depth with Blind as a 5th.

Benfica fans on Reddit seem to be pretty unanimous that he's better than Smalling/Blind/Rojo/Jones. Blind is unlikely to ever feature at CB again under Mourinho and I doubt any of the other 3 are in Mourinho's long term plans for #1 CB despite Jones/Rojo doing well the last few games. Smalling has been garbage for a while.

Semedo still makes a lot of mistakes, mostly losing possession when he shouldn't, or having a bad approach to a tackle. But he's insanely fast, and doesn't back down from wingers, he's very hardly beaten by a dribble. His biggest strength is his offensive ability though, I'm sure there are nice highlights on youtube.

45€M does seem like a lot of money, but it's hard to judge the market on young CB's these days, he's (imho) much better than every other CB currently playing for Man Utd though

Expected Mourinho to go for an older, more experienced CB. If it wasn't for the Semedo part of the story, I would have assumed Lindelöf was being signed as a RB. It just seems very un-Mourinho to be planning on a u-23 backline (Shaw-Bailly-Lindelöf-Semedo).
