Not only Conmebol. Every confederation except UEFA cares and the reason is obvious. It's the only chance they have to play one of the best teams in the world in an official competition. Not really hard to understand. Are you bragging because the countries near you have a lot of money and are able to buy the best players in the world or something?

it's always funny when people brag about winning competitions that others don't really care about, hence terms like "mickey mouse cup".

The South American leagues are terrible right now and it obviously is because all the good players get sold as soon as they do something not terrible. If all players stayed in their own countries Conmebol and UEFA teams would be at around the same level. I don't feel like I am saying anything controversial.

I think FIFA really should do something about the CWC because it sucks to have a World Cup with only one good team and it would be nice to let every country in the world have a chance to compete for a prestigious title.I understand its easy to not care about this if you are from Europe and you can already compete for the most prestigious title.

It's not like we are all fans of Barcelona and Madrid over here mate, my team and country lose their good players just as quickly as yours (if not more so).

lol CWC though, who gives a ****

Dutch clubs can compete against the heavyweights tho. For SA teams, the cwc is the only opportunity for that in a semi competitive setting. Not hard to see why they care

Kind of like the hockey world championship

What royalblue said. It must be nice to have a chance to play against the best every now and then and who knows, maybe someday win a game against them or go on a cinderella run like Porto did under Mourinho.

Honestly even I don't care about the CWC the way it is now because it's a huge mismatch. I care more when a brazilian team is playing because I like to see how it matches up against one of the best in the world.

Good question. I assume the standard is pub level? The average 35k population Town could probably cobble together 19 amateur teams but the bottom ones would be literal hungover pub teams no subs type outfits.

Of course they would, they were in the 60's etc, in fact even up until the 90's the gap wasn't really there. Only since the mid 90's onwards has it truly opened up. Serie A money was probably the start of the gap.

But the competition just doesn't have the history, prestige etc in Europe and I have no idea if it would even be possible for that to ever change. A lot of fans would have to think carefully before remembering if they even won it. Like United in 2008. It's like remembering if you won the Uefa Super Cup.

More money maybe. Can't see another answer. I. E. More prize money etc but also money in the game taking away Europe's powerbase. Chinese league becoming the new Europe in 10 years time. Who knows. Tbh Europe's disdain for the competition pre dates the big financial /quality gap. They didn't care in the 60's-70's either and even boycotted it a lot or just refused to play. So that makes me doubt if it ever has a chance.
