I'm not sure hockey even has a tier on ESPN anymore

it's below 2nd tier

Hockey gets about two minutes a sportscenter, half of which is spent making fun of Melrose's suit.

Gretzky's story is way more interesting than Bartman/Cubs.

The Bartman documentary seems like the least interesting because its been covered ad nauseam and it didn't happen that long ago. What new insight could the film possibly have. Bartman's life is ruined? The Cubs are jinxed? Nothing new.

Naw, like I literally do not care at all about Bartman. I have no clue if ESPN is making a documentary about that kid in NY/Baltimore series, but thats way more compelling and interesting since it basically was the pivotal moment for both of those teams. One has just completely fallen apart while the other has had massive success since that incident.

An interview with Steve Bartman ldo. Its been 6 years and no one has gotten that yet.

I'm not saying the Bartman doc is going to be more interesting than Gretzky, just that if you're going to debut a new series of documentaries while the focus of the sports world is on the baseball playoffs then it would make sense to tie into that.

I agree that a Jeffrey Maier retrospective would be interesting. The fact that he was treated so well for breaking the rules is pretty terrible. Guiliani gave him a key to the city ffs.

Maybe a 5 minute "where are they now?" type piece, but I can't see his story sustaining a 1 hour documentary (unless you want to get all idiotic and blame him for what happened to the Orioles, and credit for what happened to the Yankees, after that play).

. If they made it properly (ie don't focus on Maier personally) it would be a good piece.

Yeah, I doubt I'd want an hour of it. Probably belongs lumped in with the Bartman doc, they're essentially 2 sides of the same coin.

Jeffery Maier would be a terrible documentary. It either would be incredibly boring (hey, here's a kid who caught a flyball for a homerun!), or it would be very dishonest by giving him credit as a catalyst for the fortunes of the Yankees/Orioles when it was really just Angelos being an idiot who doesn't know how to run a baseball team and Steinbrenner being willing to spend three times as much as the average team. The actual play isn't that interesting, it was in game 1 of a series the most successful team of all time won 4-1, it was nothing like the Bartman game.

Neither play affected the teams involved nearly as much is the general perception. Both plays had huge impacts on the lives of the fans involved. They are very similar plays in many regards.

Yeah it was just a joke because of MB's 1k word posts itt. I even threw in an edit to make sure he knew it was just a playful joke and didn't take it personally, but you can't win em all.

The speakerphone call when Gretzky is in the LA office is really interesting. I didn't know that Gretzky had as much say in the trade as he did, I thought it was all the Edmonton organization behind the whole deal.

edit: Janet Jones Gretzky is smoke.

Half of them look like they'll be awesome, the other half are things nobody gives a crap about, even back when they happened.

Franchise - Thank you finally explaining. If you hadn't thrown in the edit with my name I wouldn't have even known your post was about me in the first place. That's why I asked. There was nothing to take personally. I completely had no idea what you were referring to.

Bump for tonight:

Quote:
In late March of 1984, a moving company secretly packed up the Baltimore Colts’ belongings and its fleet of vans snuck off in the darkness of the early morning. Leaving a city of deeply devoted fans in shock and disbelief. What caused owner Robert Irsay to turn his back on a town that was as closely linked to its team as any in the NFL? Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson, himself a long-standing Baltimore Colts fanatic, will probe that question in light of the changing relationship of sports to community. Through the eyes of members of the Colts Marching Band, Levinson will illustrate how a fan base copes with losing the team that it loves.
How good this is probably comes down to how well it's produced because the subject matter seems meh: team leaves, people get pissed - especially under those circumstances.

Finally got through the Gretzky one last night. I thought it was better than most others seemed to. It seemed stretched a bit thin to get to an entire hour - it felt like 75%+ of the program focused on the days around the trade with the rest addressing the before & after. But it was a crazy thing to happen and Gretzky is unapologetic about the Oilers not being able to afford him so the trade had to happen. I don't hate on him for this, he's at least honest about it being about the money, and as much as the parties claimed at the end that they would do it again, I doubt it. Gretzky seemed to really like the city of L.A. and Edmonton got an asston of picks, players, and money. But the Kings weren't good, he never again won a title and after the Oilers won again a couple of years later their run ended. So within a short time both teams basically sucked or were at best mediocre.

Yeah I don't see any way that deal happens again in today's society.

As for tonights show, color me meh, "through the eyes of the Colt's marching band"??? cool.

I think the Colts marching band angle could be really cool. The commercials make it seem like they had yearly parades and went to NFL functions to play and basically refused to die until they got another team. Seems like it could be very cool.

It's crazy that Colts were stolen from Baltimore and then Baltimore stole the Browns from Cleveland. I still can't wrap my head around the Browns relocating.

That clip of the owner (?) saying how it was "his team, not yours..." was pretty douche/badass.

I thought the Gretzky one was great. Especially the part when he said he thinks about what may have been all the time if he nixed the trade.

Well the state was threatening to try to use eminent domain to take the team from him, so its probably from that context.

Apparently this has interviews with current Colts owner Jim Irsay (his late father is the one who moved the team), and he hasn't ever really discussed it in interviews before so this could be interesting.
