also some CTE hot takes from media members like "how did they find players with working memories?" despite the QB talking about early onset dementia and suicidal thoughts at the end of the damn movie lol

I assume you're talking about Of Miracles and Men, which came out around a year ago. It stars Slava Fetisov and features a cameo by his very attractive daughter.

Highly recommended...one of my favorites.

I've seen all of Volume 1. Once Brothers is far and away my favorite.

Others I enjoyed, although I have not seen them in years:
Without Bias
Guru of Go
The 16th Man
Four Days in October
Into the Wind

I didn't see many of Volume 2 but really like Of Miracles and Men. Bad Boys was pretty good too.

In Volume 3, I think there have been some very good films so far:

- The Gospel According to Mac - crazy how much went on around that program in those years
- The Prince of Pennsylvania - amazing that I had no knowledge of this story before Foxcatcher came out (documentary much better than movie, IMO)
- Four Falls of Buffalo - cool how the city embraced the team, even in defeat

I saw some of the '85 Bears doc. Not much new to me at least, anyone old enough to remember that team knows how popular they were with even people outside of Chicago.

All these years later I really didn't remember how and why The Fridge wound up being used as a running back so that was a nice nugget of info.

Did they mention how lucky they were that the Patriots beat Miami in Miami for the first time in like 15-20 years which saved the Bears from another beat down by the Dolphins?

The Bears had a talented and loaded team but I'm convinced Buddy and Ditka would have been too stubborn to adjust and Marino was kryptonite to that 46 defense. Couldn't sack him and the Dolphins didn't care if you stuffed the run game.

Enjoyed the '85 Bears b/c I was 1 when it happened and didn't know much of the story. There were so many great personalities on that team and they got nearly all of them to give interviews so it made for a great doc.

-Kinda funny that coaches were so stubborn about 'stablishing and would just play right into Buddy Ryan's hands. I checked the boxscore on the sole loss of the '85 season to the Dolphins and the Bears outyarded 'em 343-335, so it was more the 4 turnovers doing them in. Sucks that we were robbed of what would have been an epic Super Bowl.

-Really surprised that Walter Payton raised such a stink about not getting a TD in the Super Bowl. He seemed like an all around awesome guy so that seemed a bit out of character for him.

-Would have loved to hear a more in-depth account of everything surrounding the cheap shot by GB that knocked McMahon out for the '86 season. With the rate the Bears were knocking out QBs I'm guessing there may have been league-wide sentiment that they were a cheap team and I'm sure other teams were pleased to see Chicago get theirs. Was there ever any retaliation towards Green Bay or the guilty player? Who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to bring in Flutie with 4 weeks to go and just hand the keys over to him? Seems like Tomczak or that other guy probably would have given them much more Super Bowl equity.

Looking at Jim McMahon's football ref page is interesting. He never played a full season and must have been hurt nearly every season. I guess his reputation as a bonehead who took unnecessary shots was well-deserved, and he probably had a huge target on his back due to the dirty reputation of the Bears D and also his personality that could rub people the wrong way. His record from his 3rd season with the Bears on was pretty astounding though, 37-5 over 5 seasons. The Bears probably should have gotten 3-4 Super Bowls out of that team.

EDIT: OK, I looked back over the '86 season and it seems that 30 For 30's take wasn't entirely accurate. They were 6-0 with McMahon, 7-0 with Tomczak, but they were winning in spite of him as he had a 2-10 TD-INT ratio, and they were 0-2 with Fuller. Flutie played sparingly for a couple games, and only started the last regular season game at Dallas, a 24-10 win. The playoff loss at home seemed like mostly an uninspired performance all around. I doubt Tomczak or Fuller would have changed much.

The Bears/Dolphins game was a 31-10 blow out at halftime before finishing at a semi-respectable 38-24 loss. The Bears 46 scheme was helpless against Marino's 3 step drops and precision accuracy. They had a loaded roster to play something more vanilla and be solid favorites over the 14-4 Dolphins (if they'd made the Super Bowl) but if Buddy and Ditka got stubborn and showed up with that 46 scheme again they would have gotten torched again.

The Bears game logs were absurd that season. Coming into week 13 vs the Dolphins they had given up a total of 39 points in the previous 7 weeks and then after the loss they gave up 43 points total in their final 6 games. It was really amazing how over matched all other offenses looked against that defense including the defending world champion 49ers who managed only 10 points at home vs the Bears in week 6.

Also, Ditka was a jerk for not getting Walter a TD. The Bears had TD runs of 2 yards, 1 yard, and 1 yard and Walter didn't get any of those carries. The last one going to the Fridge in garbage time (3Q but still garbage time) was really insulting.

Steve McMichael really stole the show in the 85 Bears doc. He had the most entertaining parts of the show

This.

It would have been a snooze-fest without him. Overall, it was pretty entertaining, but seemed to lack all the "never before told" insights that were promised.

Yeah I thought it was fine, but wouldn't be tempted to watch again. By comparison I think I've watched Winning Time 3x and will probably again next time it shows up on my DVR.

I was king of disappointed in the Bo Jackson one too - because as a Royals fan I pretty much knew all of it already. There were definitely some Bo moments that didn't become a national sensation that they could have added.

One game vs. the Yankees Bo hit 3 homers his first 3 at bats. The 3rd was a semi-check swing that just made it over the left field short porch. I really thought he was going to hit 4, maybe 5 homers that game. Then he missed on a dive for a Deion Sanders liner (that no one else could have even come close to) which turned into an insane inside the park homer with Bob Boone missing the tag and Deion leaping over him. Naturally Bo was injured on the play and couldn't bat again. It was a perfect microcosm of his career.

I wish they had covered that more than just a brief flash of a headline that Bo hit 3 homers in a game. I don't feel like anyone involved in that was actually following Bo closely at the time.

Didn't realize Ditka was something of a joke to his players. And damn they were hard on Flutie.

Also I refuse to believe Bo hit the scoreboard crown. I'm not even sure anyone's ever hit the base of the scoreboard. The crown is at least 100' higher.

Ok this says he hit the base, which is believable: http://joeposnanski.com/joevault/?p=60

I think I really appreciated this more the second time through. The first time through I was hoping for a bunch of stuff I'd never seen/known about before, like most 30 for 30s I watch. When I already knew pretty much everything they talked about, I was a little disappointed.

But the second time through I really appreciate what an awesome human being Bo is. He could have been the ultimate prima donna. Yet all he wants to do is to bow hunt.
