It show's Stoke's transfer policy saw them spend £99m over 5 years, and only receive £8m in player sales.

So, can you explain to the idiots among us how that is "very successful"?

At the start of that period they were a newly promoted Championship side and at the end of it they were an established midtable Premier League club pulling in the amount they'd spent in that five years every year from TV money.

Seems very successful to me.

If you're spending 12x the amount on transfers than you're getting for selling then it's reasonable to infer you've got a lot of dead weight in wages too.

I'd argue Southampton and Lester have been "very successful".

There are clubs that have spent less and achieved the same as Stoke.

Few have spent more and achieved a similar or worse result.

Therefore, I think it's hard to argue they have been "very successful" when compared with clubs with similar resources who have been promoted.

Everyone in this thread massively jealous of Liverpool's transfer committee...

You didn't ask for a comparison with other clubs, you asked us to explain how their transfer policy has been very successful, which it has been because it helped them achieve what they set out to do.

The success of other clubs with different strategies is irrelevant to the question you asked.

Story developing. West Ham and Newcastle the clubs involved.

Businesswoman of the Year wouldn't let that happen.

Chances of any punishment more severe than an insignificant fine are probably close to zero.

I agree comparison with other clubs strategies is somewhat irrelevant, however it does provide a point of contrast.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if Stoke were happy with the transfer strategy employed by Pulis, then they wouldn't have employed a technical director in December 2012 and sacked Pulis the following summer. The following 2 seasons saw their gross spend at £2m for 13/14, and £4.3m for 14/15, while they finished higher in the league (9th both seasons) than under Pulis whose best finish was 11th.

Grunching but that Pollock goal is stupidly similar to Le Tissier vs Newcastle 20 years ago.

What's the Newcastle connection?

I wonder if there's somebody who has managed both clubs in recent years. Maybe someone who had to leave a high profile job recently under allegations of corruption...

Willie Mckay the connection imo.

It is to do with hooky deals out of France, supposedly, which is obviously a preferred Geordie hunting ground. There is a suggestion that it may relate to Payet's 18 month stint at our place in between spells at Marseille. We have signed four players from France since 2010 - three from Marseille...

Wasn't he Joey Barton's agent (maybe he still is)?

Marseille another connection with Barton. I wonder if he's been cooperating with the FA on the quiet and that's why his gambling charges still haven't been resolved.
